Meet Nova and Noel!

These adorable pups recently visited Soft Paws Animal Clinic + Urgent Care for their second puppy wellness visit, and both are looking healthy!

Dr. Jackson wants to remind pet owners about the dangers of canine parvovirus (Parvo), a highly contagious and potentially deadly virus that can survive in contaminated soil for months or longer.

Parvo can cause severe vomiting, bloody diarrhea, dehydration, and even death.

IMPORTANT: Unvaccinated puppies should not be placed on the ground in public outdoor areas where other dogs may have been. Even healthy-looking puppies are vulnerable until they complete their vaccination series!

Prevention saves lives! Keep your puppy's vaccinations on schedule and avoid high-risk environments.

DID YOU KNOW THAT A HAIRBALL CAN BE LIFE-THREATENING TO YOUR CAT?

Most cat owners think of hairballs as a normal part of owning a cat.

However, what many don't realize is that hairballs can sometimes cause serious gastrointestinal obstructions and, if left untreated, can become fatal.

Recently, Soft Paws Animal Clinic + Urgent Care treated a cat experiencing a true medical emergency caused by a hairball. The situation required immediate emergency intervention to save the cat's life.

Yes, you read that correctly. A hairball!

We want to use this experience to educate cat owners about the potential dangers of hairballs and the importance of recognizing warning signs, including repeated vomiting, loss of appetite, lethargy, abdominal discomfort, and difficulty passing stool.

While most hairballs pass without serious complications, some can become lodged in the gastrointestinal tract and require emergency veterinary treatment.
Please don't ignore persistent vomiting or assume your cat is simply trying to pass a hairball. Early intervention can save lives.

Is your pet suddenly drinking more water and urinating more than usual? Don’t assume it’s normal.

Dr. Jackson currently has Dr. To Be Angelo, a veterinary student, spending time at Soft Paws to gain hands-on experience while in veterinary school. Today, Angelo and Dr. Jackson encountered a very interesting case.

Benji’s owner noticed that she had been drinking more water and urinating more frequently. While these signs may seem harmless, increased thirst and urination can be indicators of an underlying medical condition.

Under Dr. Jackson’s guidance, Dr. To Be Angelo worked through the case, processed the appropriate diagnostics, and the team was able to diagnose Benji with diabetic ketoacidosis, also known as DKA.

DKA is a serious and potentially life-threatening complication of diabetes that requires prompt medical attention.

Benji’s case is an important reminder: changes in your pet’s normal habits can be their way of telling you something is wrong.

If your pet suddenly begins drinking significantly more water or urinating more frequently, don’t ignore it or assume it’s normal. Schedule a veterinary examination to make sure there isn’t a serious underlying condition.

Did you know your pet can potentially make YOU sick?

Some diseases and infections can be transmitted between animals and humans. These are known as zoonotic diseases.

Today on Talks with Dr. Jackson, Dr. Jackson speaks briefly about zoonotic diseases, how transmission can occur, and simple steps pet owners can take to help protect themselves and their families.

Zoonotic diseases can include certain parasites, bacterial infections, fungal infections, and viruses. Exposure can occur through bites or scratches, contact with f***s or urine, contaminated environments, or direct contact with an infected animal.

The goal isn’t to be afraid of your pets. It’s to be informed.
Routine veterinary care, parasite prevention, good hygiene, properly handling animal waste, and recognizing signs of illness are all important ways to help protect both your pet and your family.

Your dog suddenly doesn’t want to jump, seems painful when picked up, or is having trouble walking. Could it be a slipped disc?

Episode 4 of Talks with Dr. Jackson is all about IVDD!

Today, Dr. Jackson breaks down Intervertebral Disc Disease (IVDD), commonly referred to as a “slipped disc,” and explains why pet owners should know the signs.

IVDD occurs when one or more of the discs that cushion the vertebrae of the spine degenerate, bulge, or rupture. This can place pressure on the spinal cord and surrounding nerves.

Signs can range from back or neck pain and reluctance to move or jump to weakness, difficulty walking, loss of coordination, and in severe cases, paralysis.

Some breeds are more predisposed to IVDD, but it can occur in many dogs. Treatment depends on the severity of the condition and may range from strict activity restriction and medical management to emergency surgery in more serious cases.

Watch as Dr. Jackson examines an extreme and unusual case with an unknown cause.

Although this pet appears to be doing relatively well considering the severity of the abnormality, Dr. Jackson is concerned about the pet’s comfort and overall quality of life. At this time, we are unsure what caused this condition. Additional diagnostics would be required to learn more about the abnormality, determine the underlying cause, and better understand what treatment options may be available.

Due to the owner’s limited resources, we are asking our community to help us raise funds through The Soft Paws Animal Clinic Foundation to assist with this pet’s medical care and additional diagnostic testing.

Our goal is to get this pet some relief while gathering the information needed to determine the best path forward for their comfort and quality of life.

Right at closing time, a TRUE emergency came through the doors of Soft Paws Animal Clinic + Urgent Care.

The pet arrived frantic and open-mouth breathing. Dr. Jackson immediately recognized that something was seriously wrong and discovered that the patient was actively choking from what appeared to be a hairball lodged in the esophagus.

There was no time to waste.

Dr. Jackson and the Soft Paws team quickly worked to stabilize the patient, identify the problem, and coordinate transfer to an emergency hospital for continued treatment and additional diagnostics.

Urgent care is about recognizing when a patient needs immediate intervention, providing the appropriate initial care, and knowing when advanced or overnight emergency care is necessary.

We’re thankful we were still there when this patient needed us most, and we’re hoping for a great outcome.

When should you spay or neuter your pet?

The answer isn’t always the same for every dog or cat.

Dr. Jackson speaks briefly about some of the variables that can help determine the appropriate time to spay or neuter your pet. Age, breed, size, s*x, overall health, lifestyle, and individual risk factors can all play a role in deciding when the procedure should be performed.

For some pets, earlier spaying or neutering may be appropriate, while others may benefit from waiting longer. This is why the decision should be based on the individual patient rather than a one-size-fits-all recommendation.

Talk with your veterinarian about what makes the most sense for your pet.
