🌱 Did you know? Today, June 24th, is Peru's Farmer's Day (Día del Campesino)!

🇵🇪 The date traces back to Inti Raymi, the Inca Festival of the Sun, which marks the winter solstice and honors the agricultural cycle. In 1969, Peru officially recognized the day as Día del Campesino alongside major agrarian reforms, highlighting the vital role of farmers in shaping the nation's future.

Peru's agricultural heritage has also given the world exceptional coffee, including that of Villa Rica—a tradition we were honored to celebrate through a past collaboration with Taproom Coffee at our market. ☕

At Unearthing Farm & Market, we're always inspired by the stories and people behind the food we share. Stay tuned for our next market on July 11th! 🌿

From our curious goats and pigs to the busy chickens supplying fresh eggs for our community food fridge, our animals bring so much joy to our neighborhood 🐐🐖🐓💚

But behind every cuddle and farm visit is the daily work of animal stewardship—and one of our biggest expenses. From feed and veterinary care to shelter upkeep and enrichment, our animals depend on consistent, compassionate care. We urgently need community support to sustain our animal program and rebuild their home, a project that will cost $25,000–$50,000. Just $10 a month fully funds the care of one chicken—if 30 neighbors step up with a recurring gift, our entire flock is covered 🥚✨

Want to see what it really takes to care for our crew? Join one of our upcoming Animal Handling & Care Seminar Volunteer Days and experience the rewarding, behind-the-scenes work of animal stewardship 🧑‍🌾🌿

Space is limited—sign up to volunteer at pointapp.org/orgs/4496 or make your monthly donation TODAY at donorbox.org/ufm. Our animals need your support 💛🐾

This Juneteenth, we are reflecting on the connections between liberation, land, and community. Although American agriculture is deeply rooted in Indigenous displacement and the forced labor of enslaved African Americans, generations of Black growers have reclaimed the soil as a space for independence, resilience, and community care. That legacy continues today as Black farmers, gardeners, and land stewards fight for food sovereignty and land access.

Here in Atlanta, we’re celebrating that legacy by highlighting Farmer Bobby Wilson and the team at Metro Atlanta Urban Farm in College Park. For nearly twenty years, their five-acre farm has nourished our community through fresh food, agricultural education, and hands-on growing opportunities. Bobby’s work also reaches the national stage through his service on the USDA Urban Agriculture Advisory Board, where he represents the Southeast and underserved farming communities.

As we celebrate today, we recommit to keeping our hands in the dirt, keeping our farm stand accessible to our neighbors, and continuing our work in local land remediation. Happy Juneteenth, Atlanta! ✊🏾🌻

Remediation Update: Fresh Progress at the Farm! 🚜✨

Our excavation crews have officially cleared the bulk of the property from the creek tree line to the center lot. Right now, they’re digging deep around the driveway and pavilion to clear out buried slag—safely spraying down the earth throughout the day to keep our neighborhood air clean.

Over the next few weeks, the old soil will be hauled away to make room for rolling deliveries of fresh, clean topsoil. Once that is spread, we will rebuild our cultivation rock road and plant a sweeping cover crop. As soon as those seeds hit 70% germination, our team will officially be back on the land prepping for community programming. 👩‍🌾🌾

We are incredibly close to the finish line, but we need a final push to help us cross it. Digging out the old soil is just step one; now we need to fund and rebuild our agricultural infrastructure from scratch. If you’re able to help us jumpstart this next chapter and restore the farm, please consider pitching in at donorbox.org/ufm 🌱

Thank you for sticking with us and keeping this space growing! 💚

A stunning 0-0 tie between Spain and Cabo Verde right here in Atlanta?! ⚽️ What a match!

But beyond the stadium, both countries are also showing the world how agriculture can adapt to environmental challenges and bring people together 🌱

🇨🇻 Cabo Verde is an island nation facing extreme aridity, unpredictable rainfall, and soil erosion—challenges that once contributed to devastating famines. Today, they are using solar-powered desalination, drip irrigation, and hydroponics to grow food with up to 90% less water.

🇪🇸 Spain’s “Social Farming” networks have transformed hundreds of urban gardens into spaces for connection and care, bringing elderly and vulnerable neighbors—often through women-led initiatives—together to grow food and community side-by-side.

That same commitment to local stewardship, food access, and community connection is exactly what we’re cultivating here at Unearthing Farm & Market! 🌿

The match may have ended in a draw, but rooting for hyperlocal food systems is always a win. Come grab some fresh produce at our next market! 🌍✨
