We are sorry to let everyone know that we are flooded in today, and most likely tomorrow. We also had a large tree fall on our internet line so now we have no phones or internet- so there is really no way to contact us. If you have an emergency please consider hauling to OSU. If you have a scheduled appointment I will reach out when I can to get it rescheduled. Thank you!

Here in Oklahoma, we received an email from our state veterinarian letting us know that there have been many positive rabies cases in the state, including many involving skunks. He also let us know that there have been 4 cattle, 2 dogs, 2 horses, 1 cat and 1 goat test positive, plus a litter of piglets attacked by a suspected rabid skunk.

Even if you're not in Oklahoma, it's time to remind your clients to get their animals, including livestock, vaccinated against rabies. We are starting to see West Nile cases too, so it's time to get all vaccines caught up!

This week, Kentucky saw not only a case of rabies, but also a case of West Nile Virus.

Although most horse owners have probably heard of West Nile, you may not know what to look for or how to ward off the virus.

West Nile virus (WNV) was first detected in North America in the late summer of 1999. Following its arrival in the states, a vaccine was developed and has since been a recommended annual vaccination following the initial series.

If you suspect your horse may have contracted West Nile, contact your vet for next steps. Fortunately, if your horse is vaccinated against WNV, they have a good chance of making a full recovery.

Every horse should be vaccinated for rabies.

We are looking for a new ambulatory veterinary assistant. This is part time hours and will typically start at 8:45 and be done by 3:30 ish to get kids off the bus. Schedule can be flexible if needed

This is somewhat grueling as the main duties include holding horse heads for dental floats and helping to restrain cattle for procedures. Please send resumes or interest to [email protected].

Summer and fall are the peak time for arbovirus infection as these diseases (which include Eastern Equine Encephalitis [EEE], West Nile Virus [WNV], Western Equine Encephalitis [WEE] and Venezuelan Equine Encephalitis [VEE]) are transmitted by several different species of mosquitoes and biting insects.

With more states reporting cases of West Nile Virus (28 cases have been reported in August as of today), this is your reminder to keep your horses up to date on vaccinations with the guidance of your veterinarian to best protect your equine friends from infection.

Learn more about West Nile Virus and find downloadable resources on the Equine Disease Communication Center's website at: https://www.equinediseasecc.org/west-nile-virus
