🌟🐾 𝗢𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝗘𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗼𝘆𝗲𝗲 𝗦𝗽𝗼𝘁𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁: 𝗠𝗲𝗲𝘁 𝗞𝗮𝘁 𝗣𝗿𝗶𝗱𝗱𝘆, 𝗩𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝗔𝘀𝘀𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁! Kat's love for animals started early. Growing up on a small farm along the Gulf Coast, caring for animals and rescuing strays sparked a passion that eventually led her to a career in veterinary medicine. 🐶🐱

After marrying her high school sweetheart in 2007 during his Marine Corps service, Kat moved to San Diego, California. There, she worked as a ranch hand for a nonprofit that provided equine-assisted activities and therapies for children with special needs. 🐴❤️

After moving to the Tennessee Valley, Kat began working in veterinary medicine in 2013. She earned her 𝗔𝘀𝘀𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗦𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗩𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝗧𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘆 𝗶𝗻 𝟮𝟬𝟭𝟳 and plans to pursue her veterinary technician license soon!

Kat first joined Madison Veterinary Emergency in 2023 as a relief receptionist and veterinary assistant. It didn't take long for her to discover just how much she loved emergency medicine, and in 2025, she officially joined our team part-time. 🚨🐾

Emergency medicine can be unpredictable and fast-paced, but that's exactly where Kat thrives. She takes great pride in helping stabilize, comfort, and advocate for pets during some of their most critical moments while supporting the families who love them.

When she's not helping our patients, Kat loves traveling and enjoying outdoor adventures with her husband and two teenage daughters. Their favorites include camping, paddleboarding, and hiking. 🏕️🥾

And it's probably no surprise that Kat has quite the crew waiting for her at home! Their family includes:
🐴 1 horse
🫏 1 donkey
🐱 2 cats
🐶 5 dogs
🦔 1 hedgehog
🐔 And chickens!

She also enjoys gardening, reading, and anything involving true crime. 🌱📚🔎

If you're considering adopting a dog, remember that bringing home a new family member comes with more than plenty of cuddles and treats. Helping your new pup start healthy and safe is an important part of responsible pet ownership.

Unfortunately, 𝗳𝗶𝘀𝗵 𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗸 𝗮𝗰𝗰𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗮 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗼𝗻 𝗽𝗲𝘁 𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗰𝘆 that our team sees. Dogs are naturally curious, and the smell of bait or fish can make a hook especially tempting. Hooks can become embedded in the lips, mouth, tongue, paws, or skin, and in some cases, pets may even swallow them.

🎣 𝗜𝗳 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗽𝗲𝘁 𝗴𝗲𝘁𝘀 𝗰𝗮𝘂𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗯𝘆 𝗮 𝗳𝗶𝘀𝗵 𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗸:
🐾 Keep them as calm and still as possible.
🚫 Do not pull or yank on the hook. The barb can cause additional tissue damage.
✂️ If fishing line is attached, prevent your pet from chewing or swallowing more of it, but don't tug on the line.
👄 If the hook is in the mouth or has been swallowed, do not attempt to remove it yourself.
🩺 Contact a veterinarian for guidance and seek veterinary care promptly.

Removing a fish hook isn't always as simple as pulling it back out. Depending on where the hook is located, you may need sedation, imaging, or a procedure to remove it safely and minimize injury.

Repeated trips to the litter box, straining, crying, or producing little to no urine can indicate a urinary blockage. This is especially dangerous in male cats and requires immediate veterinary attention.

Open mouth breathing, labored breathing, unusual respiratory sounds, or blue or pale gums are emergencies. Cats experiencing breathing problems should be evaluated immediately.

Lilies, human medications, household chemicals, certain essential oils, and other substances can be extremely dangerous to cats. If you suspect your cat has been exposed to something toxic, don't wait for symptoms to appear.
