Keeping Your Horse on a Regular Shoeing/Trim Cycle Matters
It isn't just about looks — it’s about soundness, comfort, and long-term health.
When horses go too long between trims or shoeing:
1. Hooves can become unbalanced, putting stress on joints and
tendons
2. Cracks, flares, and chipping are more likely to develop and if already existing have opportunity to expand.
3. Small issues can turn into lameness or soreness.
4. Infection can begin due to overgrowth compacting with bacteria.
Always keep in mind just because you don't look at it doesn't mean they aren't walking on it. Make it a regular practice to pick up your horse's hooves and inspect them before every ride.
Staying on a regular cycle helps:
1. Maintain proper hoof balance
2. Support healthy movement and performance
3. Catch problems early before they become big issues
4. Keep your horse comfortable and doing their job
Cycle length may vary from horse to horse based on growth, environment, and workload requiring a shorter or longer cycle.
