West Arvada Dog Park: Improvements/Changes Ahead
Recently, on June 22nd, the City of Arvada Infrastructure Team, The Parks Department, and the West Arvada Dog Park (WADP) Board met to review the city‘s feasibility study for the proposed pumphouse as well as future improvements and upgrades to the park. In particular, we discussed improvements in walkways and entrances that would put the park in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), as well as our list of general maintenance and safety concerns within the park. Here is a recap of the meeting and the city‘s proposed Plans for the Pump House and ADA project.
The First Step in these projects is that the city will move the existing south fence (separating our parking lot and the dog park) 25 feet to the north. This fence line move is necessary to accommodate the proposed new pipe line for the new Pump House as well as the ADA compliance issues.
ADA Accessibility Upgrades:
Construction is estimated to begin in the next 4 weeks.
New Accessible Path:
A newly created crushed granite path will be installed on the West portion of the park to provide a smoother route through the park and down to the large Pavillon. This will be constructed starting at the westernmost entrance to the dog park. There will also be modifications between the two gates separating the east and west sides of the park for ADA access. The City also said they will install new crusher fine gravel on all the existing paths on the west side.
Improved Entry:
An entrance gate with a stable concrete pad and designated ADA compliant asphalt parking spaces are planned (Four diagonal parking spots)
East Gate Improvements:
At the request of the WADP Board, the City is looking at ways to make the east gate more compliant and accessible as well.
Raw Water Infrastructure Project:
As mentioned, a new raw water pipeline and pump station is needed. This will impact the WADP and Disc Golf course area. This is needed to maintain current service to existing residences as well as continued growth forecasts in the futureWhile the City has stated that their preferred site for the Pump House will be in the northwest corner of the disc golf course parking lot, at this time we have not been made aware of any specific soil studies to assess whether or not this is even a suitable location. Work on construction of the Pump House is scheduled for the end of 2027.
Minimizing Disruptions: By moving the fence now during the accessibility project, the City intend to keep the dog park open, at least partially, throughout the pipeline construction phase
Addressing Noise: The WADP Board has shared concerns regarding operational noise from the new pump station. City staff will discuss noise-mitigation options with design consultants
Nearby Road Improvements
At some point in the future there will be a new traffic signal at the intersection of 64th and Easley to improve safety and traffic flow in the area.
Next Steps:
The WADP Board will continue our partnership with the City teams in order to keep you abreast of major construction updates and timelines as well as maintenance requests and their impacts to the park.
