KNOW BEFORE YOU GO! Colorado lakes during summer. "...toxic bloom can sicken people and kill a dog within hours — and you cannot tell by looking whether the green in the water is dangerous or harmless. Only a lab test can. Plenty of green in a Colorado lake is harmless plant algae. But the dangerous stuff is the part that does not look like classic stringy 'pond scum.' Stringy algae you can pick up on a stick is usually safe. Paint-like water that runs through your fingers and won't hold its shape is the one to fear. When the two are mixed together — and they often are — assume the worst."
