We are incredibly honored and grateful to share that Pawsitive Veterinary Care has been voted Best Vet Clinic of Jefferson County!

To be nominated and chosen by our community, especially after being open for only 2 months, means more to us than words can express. Thank you to every client, family, and supporter who has trusted us with your beloved pets and taken the time to vote for us.

We also want to recognize all of the veterinary clinics in our area. Veterinary medicine itself is not a competition. It is built on compassion, teamwork, and a shared commitment to the animals and families in our community. Every veterinarian, vet tech, vet tech assistant, receptionist, and staff member works tirelessly toward the same goal of ensuring the best possible care for our patients.

🐾 Heartworm Disease: What Dog & Cat Owners Should Know

Heartworm disease is a serious, potentially fatal condition caused by long worms that live in the heart and lungs of infected pets. It spreads through mosquito bites, which means any pet—indoor or outdoor—is at risk.

🐶 Dogs
Dogs are the natural host, so heartworms grow easily inside them. Without prevention, dogs can end up with dozens or even hundreds of worms.
Common signs include:
• Persistent cough
• Tiring easily
• Weight loss
• Swollen belly in advanced cases

Heartworm disease causes lasting heart and lung damage, even after treatment. Prevention is truly the best medicine.

🐱 Cats
Cats are not natural hosts, so they usually have fewer worms, but even one worm can cause serious illness.
Signs may include:
• Coughing
• Asthma‑like episodes
• Vomiting
• Sudden collapse in severe cases

There is no approved treatment for cats, so prevention is the only protection.

🦟 Why prevention matters
Heartworms take months to grow and can live for 5–7 years in dogs and 2–3 years in cats. Because mosquitoes come indoors, every pet is vulnerable.

💛 The American Heartworm Society recommends testing every 12 months and giving prevention year‑round.

It’s Veterinary Technician Assistant Week, and we are celebrating one of the very best, Elektra.
She works incredibly hard, cares deeply for every patient, and brings so much heart to our team.
When she’s not here loving on your pets, you can find her fishing, camping, hunting, or floating her worries away. She’s also a proud dog mom to Echo, Buck, and Groot.
