🐱 Meet Nerm! 💙
Today, Nerm visited Crossroads Animal Clinic for an important wellness screening, including testing for Feline Leukemia Virus (FeLV), Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV, often called feline AIDS), and heartworms.
These simple tests can provide valuable information about your cat’s health and help us catch problems early.
🦠 Feline Leukemia (FeLV) is a contagious virus that weakens a cat’s immune system and can lead to serious illnesses, including anemia, infections, and certain cancers. The good news is that FeLV is preventable with vaccination, especially for kittens and cats that spend time outdoors or may come into contact with other cats.
🩺 Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV) affects the immune system, making cats more susceptible to infections over time. While many FIV-positive cats can live happy lives with proper care, knowing their status helps us provide the best medical care and reduce the risk of spreading the virus to other cats.
🦟 Heartworms aren’t just a problem for dogs—they can affect cats too. Heartworm disease is spread by mosquitoes and can cause coughing, breathing problems, vomiting, and even sudden death. Unfortunately, there is no approved treatment to eliminate heartworms in cats, making monthly heartworm prevention the best way to protect them.
Whether your cat is an indoor adventurer or enjoys time outside, routine testing, vaccination, and prevention are essential parts of keeping them healthy.
Thank you, Nerm, for being such a great patient today on World Feline Leukemia Day! ❤️ If your cat hasn’t been tested for FeLV/FIV or isn’t on heartworm prevention, give us a call. We’d love to help keep your feline friend protected for years to come! 🐾
