Our goal is to find them loving forever homes in USA. Many are then abandoned when they grow in size, require attention, want to play or if the family expects a baby. Due to the culture in Serbia, dogs are considered objects and not part of the family. Currently there are no Animal Welfare laws are in place in Serbia, so people don’t think twice abandoning them or abusing them. Forests are full of Goldens and other purebreds who eventually succumb to the elements, attacks by other feral dogs, or die from disease and or hunger. Although there are no kill shelters in Serbia, the conditions are so inhumane that they have become death camps. The majority of the dogs contract serious diseases within the first week they are in the shelter and most do not survive. The lucky ones who survive in the shelter are often dropped in the forests when the shelter become overcrowded. It is a vicious cycle that never ends. Even the streets are not safe as there are gypsies and drug addicts who will take these dogs and mistreat them. Some will even harm the dogs physically just so they can use the dog to beg for money. Smaller Goldens are also used as bait dogs for Kangals, “Anatolian Shepard’s”, Pit bulls and Dogo’s. Since there are currently no animal welfare laws, very little is done to help them and most do not survive. locates adoptable dogs, determines their potential for adoptability in USA, and screens them for all possible illness. As a strict policy, we DO NOT bring dogs who have had distemper. We make sure the dogs have full blood, urine and additional tests and they are quarantined for minimum of 15 days. The dogs are properly vetted for two months and afterwards reside in pet hotels, where they receive further assessment and some training before coming to the USA. After 15 days of quarantine, they receive additional required vaccinations for canine coronavirus, rabies, kennel cough and the DHLPP combination vaccine. Once medical assessment and care is complete, the dogs are spayed/neutered and micro chipped. At Legacy Rescue Inc. we work very closely with our team in Serbia and have direct communication with our vets and pet hotels. All paperwork and passport information is completed in accordance with USA requirements and we comply with all applicable USDA (US Department of Agriculture) regulations. We have adopted several dogs to wonderful families and provide Golden Retrievers to several reputable Golden Retriever Rescues who have been around for over 30 years. We do have high standards and follow a very strict process before bringing these dogs to USA. Our dogs are all well behaved and very loving. We want to make sure both the dogs and adopters are a good match so both you and your new addition to your family are not disappointed. Thank you again for considering and supporting Legacy Rescue, Inc. for your next family member.

One of our oldest souls in Serbia passed away quietly in her sleep. Her name was Ava,
after Ava Gardner. Graceful, even in her final days.

When we found her, she was already so tired. Frail, worn down, carrying the weight of a life lived mostly unseen. She was with Harry, a beautiful young golden—we often wondered if he was her son. Maybe he was. It felt like it.

Ava was sick. Her kidneys were failing, and time was not on her side. But none of that mattered to us. We didn’t need years—we just needed her to know love before she left this world.

We knew she would never make the journey here. Her body wouldn’t allow it. But leaving her behind on the streets was never an option. So we stayed. We chose her. And in return, she gave us quiet trust, gentle eyes, and a kind of gratitude you don’t forget.

Not all of them make it out. Not all of them get the happy endings people imagine. But if we can give them safety, warmth, and dignity in their final chapter… that is enough.

Run free now, sweet Ava. You were loved. You mattered. And you will never be forgotten. 🤍

There is something quietly profound about the moment it all comes full circle—when the long nights, the doubt, and the stubborn refusal to give up finally give way to something right. Maisy and Murphy, who came so far from Serbia, and Queenie Goldie, who began her life in Egypt as just a six-month-old baby, all arrived here carrying more than distance; they carried stories of survival. None of it was easy. But they endured.

And now, watching them in homes where they are safe, cherished, and deeply loved, you realize that every ounce of effort mattered. That stubbornness, the kind that refuses to look away, was worth it.

But the truth is, they didn’t just find their way to better lives… they changed ours. Their gentleness, their resilience, their unwavering trust despite everything, bring a kind of peace that’s hard to explain. No matter how heavy the day has been, they meet us with love, with softness, with presence.

They are survivors, yes. But more than that, they are reminders of kindness, of hope, and of what it means to give and receive love without condition. In the end, it’s impossible not to feel that while we may have rescued them… they, in their own quiet way, rescued us right back.

Ode to Lilly

Nine years ago, from the sands of Egypt,
you arrived fragile, quiet, and far too thin—
carrying the weight of Anaplasmosis,
but somehow still carrying hope.

You didn’t ask for much in those early days
just kindness, just patience, just a chance to feel safe.
And at your foster home, you began again.
A little stronger. A little braver.
Learning that hands could heal,
and hearts could stay.

Then came your forever.
The family that didn’t just take you in,
they saw you.
They chose you.
And in return, you gave them everything.

You weren’t alone for long.
Along came Rex, your silly, sweet little brother,
a perfect balance to your gentle soul.
Together, you built a life full of quiet moments,
playful chaos, and unconditional love.

You were never just “rescued.”
You were cherished.
Treasured.
Deeply, completely known.

And you knew it.

From the softness of your bed
to the warmth of every hand that reached for you,
you understood—
this was home.
This was forever.

Now you’ve crossed to the Rainbow Bridge,
where pain no longer follows
and your body is light again.

But love like yours doesn’t leave.
It lingers in every corner,
in Rex’s memories,
in the hearts you held so gently.

Watch over them, sweet Lilly.
Run free, but never far.
Because a love like yours
doesn’t end,

it just becomes something
even bigger than we can see. 🐾💔

9 years ago a dog from Turkey arrived and changed a family forever.

They named him Brody.

He came with gentle eyes, a quiet soul, and a heart ready to love the life he had finally been given. And in that life he found something very special — Miles, his brother from another mother.

From that moment on, they were never really separate.

They shared the years the way only dogs can — side by side through ordinary days that turned into the best days. Warm blankets, family around them, soft hands, and the comfort of always having each other.

Four days before Christmas, Miles crossed the rainbow bridge.

And now our sweet Brody has followed him.

It hurts deeply, but there is also comfort in knowing that somewhere beyond our sight two brothers have found each other again — running together, free and whole, just like they were always meant to be.

Brody was one of the lucky ones.
A rescue who crossed an ocean and found what every dog deserves:

A home.
The best family.
A brother and two sisters,
Best mom and dad,
A life filled with love.

Run free, beautiful boy.
Miles was waiting for you.
