"National Hummingbird Day" celebrates these remarkable, jewel-toned birds and takes flight on the first Saturday of September every year, with this year landing on Sept 5th.

Discover actionable steps you can take to support hummingbird conservation and how to create a welcoming environment for them in your own backyard by adding nectar-rich, native plants to your garden to support migrating and local birds naturally. Alternatively, you can hang up a hummingbird feeder.

If you do use a hummingbird feeder, it's best to avoid store-bought hummingbird food (especially if it has red dye!) and make it yourself. The best and safest liquid for a hummingbird feeder is a homemade mixture of one part refined white sugar to four parts water.

How to Make Hummingbird Nectar:
1. Ratio: Mix 1/4 cup of plain white granulated sugar with 1 cup of water.
2. Dissolve: Stir the sugar into hot or boiling water until it completely dissolves.
3. Cool: Let the solution cool entirely to room temperature before pouring it into your feeder.
4. Store: Keep any leftover sugar water in a covered container in the refrigerator for up to a week.

Hummingbirds are a delight to watch as they flit about, gathering nectar. Take this opportunity to learn more about beautiful hummingbirds, such as the different species, how they fly the way they do, or how tiny their eggs and young can be! For instance, did you know that there are approximately 366 recognized species of hummingbirds in the world? Enjoy "National Hummingbird Day" and see just how wondrous and beautiful a tiny little bird can be.

"U.S. Bowling League Day" celebrates the spirit of competitive and social bowling every September 3rd. Gather your teammates, polish your ball, and head to the lanes for a day of strikes, spares, and good times!

A Quick History and Origins of Bowling:
In the 1830s and 1840s, bowling was primarily an outdoor game called ninepins, which drew heavy gambling. Connecticut outlawed ninepins in 1841 to stop illegal betting. Lane owners added a tenth pin to bypass the law, giving birth to modern 10-pin bowling. But did you know that 9-pin bowling is still considered illegal in all of the U.S. states with one exception - Texas? There are traditional 9-pin bowling leagues in Texas, but mostly in the Texas Hill Country and San Antonio areas. Though your local Texan bowling alley might occasionally hold 9-pin bowling tournaments for fun.

This "U.S. Bowling League Day," get inspired to join a league, cheer on friends, or simply enjoy a game with fellow enthusiasts! If you've never bowled before but were curious, today's holiday is a good excuse to find a local bowling alley and try out a game or two! Or perhaps just look for a good game to watch online or on TV.
😁🎳

"World Coconut Day" arrives every September 2nd, celebrating one of nature’s most versatile products. From its hydrating water to its rich oil and delicious flesh, the coconut offers endless possibilities.

Popular Uses of Coconuts:
1. Food & Drink: Water, milk, oil, and flesh are staples in global cooking.
2. Health & Beauty: Oil and milk are widely used for skin and hair care.
3. Industry: Husks provide coir fiber for ropes, mats, and construction materials (including coir fiber bricks!).

Coconut is a popular ingredient in human foods, snacks, and baking. If you’re enjoying coconut meat or coconut oil, it’s perfectly safe to share some with your dog. In fact, it can even be good for dogs when fed in appropriate quantities. HOWEVER, experts warn that the husk and shell pose serious risks to your dog, potentially leading to severe digestive problems - so keep them away from your furbaby!

When giving your canine companion coconut meat, milk, or water, make sure it is unsweetened and natural without artificial sweeteners such as xylitol, which is toxic for dogs. Also, give it only in small amounts as a treat. Several online recipes for dog treats include coconut as one of the ingredients.

So it's a good day to try something new with coconut: maybe bathe your four-legged companion in coconut oil shampoo (great for the skin and coat), bake a coconut cake or cookies, or try out a new dog treat recipe using coconut. Or if you don't have time to create homemade coconut dog treats, many pet stores carry coconut treat options.

Do you know if your dog likes coconut? 🌴

"Ginger Cat Appreciation Day" lights up the calendar every September 1st, celebrating the distinct personalities and fiery coats of orange felines. A software engineer named Chris Roy created the day in 2014 to honor his late cat, Doobert. Join fellow cat lovers in honoring these often-misunderstood, super-clingy, and always-ready-for-a-petting furballs.

Did you know that 80% of ginger cats are male? That's because the gene for orange fur is on the X chromosome, so since males have XY chromosomes, they only need one parent to have orange fur, vs. females, who have XX chromosomes, so they need both parents to be ginger.

Share photos of your ginger companions (canine or feline!), support local shelters, and help spread the love for these unique cats!

"National Eat Outside Day" invites everyone to enjoy their meals in the fresh air every August 31st. From leisurely picnics in the park to vibrant patio dining (whether on your own patio or at an outdoor cafe), this day celebrates the simple pleasure of al fresco eating. Grab your basket, pack a meal, and find a scenic spot to dine outdoors. Best of all, your furbabies can join you! But here in Texas, it's best to wait until the sun goes down for a late dinner. 😉
Bon appétit! 🍕🥪🍝🌮
