A properly fitted collar is more important than most people realize. Whether you’re using a flat collar or a martingale, fit matters for both safety and comfort. 🐾
✨ Flat Collar Fit
• Should sit comfortably around the neck without being too tight
• You should be able to fit 2 fingers between the collar and your dog’s neck
• Tight enough that it won’t slip over the head
• Always check fit regularly, especially for growing puppies or fluffy-coated dogs
✨ Martingale Collar Fit
• Designed to tighten slightly when pressure is applied to help prevent backing out
• When adjusted properly, the collar should tighten enough to prevent escape but not choke
• The two metal slides should never fully touch when tightened
• Keep it snug enough that your dog can’t slip out, but loose enough to stay comfortable when relaxed
✨ Extra Safety Tip
You can also add a safety clip that connects your dog’s harness to their flat collar or martingale for added security. Dogs can slip out of harnesses more often than people realize, especially if they get startled or back up unexpectedly. Having that backup connection can help prevent escapes and keep your dog safer on walks.
⚠️ A collar that is too loose can become a safety risk, while one that is too tight can cause discomfort and pressure. Proper fit makes walks safer and more enjoyable for everyone.
Remember: every dog is built differently, so always check your dog’s fit individually! 🐶
