Every spring and summer, we get the same urgent message: "I found kittens outside. What do I do?"

If this ever happens to you, the most important first step might surprise you: Pause. Observe. Wait.

Most outdoor kittens are not abandoned. Mother cats leave for hours at a time to hunt, and when we move kittens too quickly, we can accidentally separate them from the one caregiver who gives them the best chance of survival.

We've said this before, but it's worth saying again—fostering is the reason this work exists at all.

When people ask how we're able to care for so many fragile, tiny kittens… the answer isn't a building. It's not equipment. It's people. It's the person who says yes to waking up in the middle of the night to feed a kitten who can't survive without them. It's the person who opens their home to a scared, sick, or struggling life and says, "You're safe here." It's the person who falls in love… and still lets go when it's time.

Fostering is the foundation of everything we do at Esther Neonatal Kitten Alliance. Without it, there is no safety net for the kittens who need us most.

And the truth is—our community is the only reason we can keep saying yes.

Every time someone steps up to foster, it creates space for another kitten to be rescued. It turns "we wish we could help" into "we're on our way."
