🎃🐾 Halloween decorations may look fun to us… but to our dogs, they can look completely different.

Suddenly there are giant ghosts in yards, strange figures on porches, flashing lights, moving decorations, masks, costumes, and unfamiliar sounds everywhere.

For some dogs, it’s exciting. For others — especially nervous or reactive dogs — it can be a LOT to process.

When something catches a dog’s attention, I like to give them time and space to observe rather than immediately asking them to walk closer. Let them look, sniff from a comfortable distance, and decide when they’re ready to move on.

🐕 Don’t force them to approach something scary
🎃 Create distance when they need it
🦴 Reward calm observation and check-ins
👀 Pay attention to their body language
💛 Remember that every dog has a different comfort level

Confidence doesn’t have to mean walking right up to the scary thing. Sometimes confidence is simply being able to see it, process it, and move on.

🐔🍂 Shorter days can bring some changes to the flock!

As we move further into fall and daylight hours decrease, you may notice chickens adjusting right along with the season.

They may head to the coop earlier, spend their daylight hours a little differently, and egg production can naturally slow down. Some chickens may also be going through a molt this time of year, putting extra energy into growing new feathers instead of producing eggs.

Every flock is a little different, so I always pay attention to what’s normal for them when I'm caring for my chicken clients. 🤎

Seasonal changes don't necessarily mean something is wrong — sometimes the flock is simply following nature's schedule. 🐔🌾

🐾 A good walk isn’t always measured in miles.

Sometimes one of the best things I can do for a dog on a walk is simply give them time to sniff.

Sniffing, exploring, stopping to take in their surroundings, and checking in with me are all valuable parts of a walk. A dog doesn’t have to be moving nonstop for that time outside to be worthwhile.

I adjust my walks to the dog in front of me. Some dogs are ready to GO, some need more time to investigate everything, and anxious or reactive dogs may benefit from slowing things down and having space to process their environment. 🐕💛

The goal isn’t always to see how far we can get in 30 minutes. It’s giving each dog a walk that meets their individual needs.

Sometimes that means covering ground.

Sometimes it means sniffing the same bush for what feels like forever. 😂🐾

🌅🐾 The days are getting shorter — and that means more walks are happening as the sun goes down.

Evening walks can be beautiful, but lower visibility means I pay a little extra attention to what’s happening around us.

A few simple habits can make those darker walks safer:
🐕 Keep dogs close when crossing streets or passing driveways
🔦 Use reflective gear, lights, or bright-colored harnesses when possible
🚗 Watch carefully for cars pulling in and out of driveways
👀 Stay aware of other dogs, people, bikes, and wildlife that may be harder to spot
🐾 Give reactive or nervous dogs extra space — surprises can feel much bigger in the dark

A little extra visibility and awareness can go a long way toward keeping fall walks safe and enjoyable. 🍂🤎

🐱🍂 Cats notice changes, too.

As the seasons change, our cats notice more than we sometimes realize. Earlier sunsets, cooler temperatures, new decorations around the house, visitors, and changes in our own schedules can all make their environment feel a little different.

For some cats, those changes are no big deal. Others may become more cautious, hide more often, follow you around, or seem a little unsure.

Keeping a few familiar things consistent can help — regular mealtimes, favorite resting spots, daily play, and plenty of quiet space where they can retreat when they want to. 🤎

Sometimes the smallest routines bring the most comfort. 🐾

Cooler walks, earlier sunsets, and cozy days are officially on the way. 🤎

Fall is one of my favorite times to be out with the dogs. The cooler weather can make walks more comfortable, but the changing season also brings new things to think about — earlier darkness, seasonal decorations, holiday activity, and changes in our pets’ normal routines.

Throughout October, I’ll be sharing some helpful fall pet-care tips along with plenty of adorable faces from my days with your pets. 🐶🐱

😂 Ending September on a silly note!

One thing I can pretty much guarantee about working with pets: my camera roll is FULL of goofy faces, perfectly timed tongue shots, questionable sleeping positions, and moments that make me laugh. 😂🐾

I love getting to know the personalities behind every pet I care for. The silly moments are just as much a part of the job as the walks, training, routines, and care.

And sometimes you just happen to catch the perfect face at the perfect time. 😜

🐱 Comfort counts, too.

Pet care doesn’t always need to mean playtime, toys, or constant interaction. Sometimes the best thing I can give a pet is the space to simply relax and feel comfortable. ❤️

I like to meet each pet where they are. Some are ready to greet me at the door, while others prefer to watch from a distance, take their time, or curl up somewhere cozy and sleep.

Especially when their people are away, I don’t want to force interaction just because I’m there. I’d rather follow their cues and let them decide what feels comfortable.

And sometimes a peacefully sleeping kitty is a pretty good sign that they’re content exactly where they are. 💤🐾

Walks are full of little things to discover — a new smell, an interesting texture, a feather on the sidewalk, or something that deserves a very thorough investigation. 😂

I like giving dogs time to explore what catches their attention instead of making every walk about constantly moving forward. Those little moments give them opportunities to use their senses, think, and interact with the world around them.

Enrichment doesn't always require special toys or activities. Sometimes it's as simple as slowing down and letting a dog be curious. ❤️

Every dog experiences the world a little differently, and I love getting to see what each one finds interesting.

Sometimes the best part of a walk is stopping and letting a dog really investigate a good smell. 😂

Sniffing is one of the ways dogs explore and gather information about the world around them. Giving them time to use their nose can provide mental stimulation, encourage natural behavior, and make their walk that much more fulfilling.

I don’t expect every walk to be about covering as much distance as possible or keeping a perfect pace. Some dogs want to move, some want to explore, and some need a little bit of both.

I like giving the dogs I walk opportunities to slow down, make choices, and enjoy their surroundings. Sometimes that means we spend a surprising amount of time investigating one VERY important patch of dirt. 😂🐶

Their walk is for them, after all. ❤️
