MEET THE TEAM: Dr. Hayley McGhee!

Dr. Hayley earned her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from the University of Missouri in 2025 and joined the H&E team in June of that year. We're happy to have her caring for our patients and clients!

Originally from the suburbs of Olathe, Kansas, Dr. Hayley grew up playing competitive softball and volunteering with a variety of animals. She continued her softball career at the University of Arkansas–Monticello, where she pitched at the collegiate level while earning her bachelor's degree.

It was during her time in Monticello that she developed a passion for rural veterinary medicine. Today, she enjoys working with both large and small animals, making her a great fit for our mixed-animal practice!

When she's not at the clinic, Dr. Hayley enjoys spending time with family, reading, and being outdoors. You might find her at the sporting clays range, hiking with her dog, Dash, or working in her garden.

We're proud to have Dr. Hayley as part of the H&E family!

Staff Appreciation Week at H&E!

It's the little things that often make the biggest difference. The extra time spent comforting a nervous patient, the helping hand offered to a coworker, the friendly voice answering the phone, the long days out on farm calls, and the compassion shown to animals and their owners during difficult moments.

At H&E West Missouri Veterinary Clinic, we're grateful for the people who show up every day ready to work hard, care deeply, and do their part to keep our patients healthy.

Our team works across two locations and cares for animals of all shapes and sizes, and every role matters. From our veterinarians and technicians to our assistants, receptionists, and everyone behind the scenes, we couldn't do what we do without each other!

It's Veterinary Technician Appreciation Week!

This week, we're celebrating the incredible people who make H&E West Missouri Veterinary Clinic what it is!

Veterinary technicians play such an important role in animal care, from assisting with procedures and monitoring patients to comforting nervous pets and helping our veterinarians provide the best possible care.

But at H&E, we believe appreciation deserves to extend to our entire team! ❤️

From our veterinarians and technicians to our veterinary assistants, receptionists, and everyone working behind the scenes, every person contributes to the care we provide and the relationships we build with our clients.

Whether they're caring for a hospitalized patient, helping out on a farm call, answering phones, keeping things running smoothly, or lending a helping hand to a coworker, our team shows up every day for the animals and people who depend on us.

We're incredibly grateful for this hardworking, compassionate group of people. H&E wouldn't be H&E without each and every one of you!

A Prayer for Our Animal Friends

Thank You for the animals who bring joy to our homes, sustain our farms, and enrich our lives in so many ways.

Watch over the beloved pets who share our families, the livestock entrusted to our care, and all creatures who need our protection.

Give comfort to those who are sick, strength to those who care for them, and wisdom to those who work to keep them healthy.

Help us always remember that every living creature is a gift and that caring for them is a privilege.

MEET THE TEAM: DR. KAREN SMITH!

Dr. Karen is one of the owners of H&E West Missouri Veterinary Clinic and has been passionate about veterinary medicine since the fifth grade!

Originally from the Nevada, Missouri, area, she earned her Bachelor of Science in Biology from Missouri Southern State University in 2009 before completing her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree at the University of Missouri in 2014.

As a mixed animal veterinarian, Dr. Karen loves the variety her work brings and enjoys caring for a wide range of animals, from cattle and horses to chickens and even exotic species!

Life Outside the Clinic

Dr. Karen lives outside of Appleton City with her husband, Wade, and their two young boys. Their farm is home to quite the collection of animals, including cows, goats, pigs, horses, chickens, ducks, turkeys, and dogs!

When she’s not caring for patients, you might find Dr. Karen exploring the countryside on their side-by-side, enjoying the outdoors, or keeping up with her two busy boys. She loves the rural lifestyle and appreciates the strong sense of community that makes rural Missouri such a special place to call home.

HERD HEALTH: Is Your Herd Ready for Fall?

As the seasons change, it's a great time to take a closer look at your herd's health and prepare for the months ahead!

A few things to keep on your radar this fall:

- Body condition & nutrition: Are your cows in good condition heading into winter? Start supplementing early to maintain body condition. It's easier to maintain then it is to catch up before calving.

-Vaccination plans: Are your herd's vaccinations up to date for the upcoming season?

-Parasite control: The IDEAL time to treat is after the first hard frost. The BEST time to treat is when you have time to work them. 😉

-Overall herd health: Catching potential concerns early can help prevent bigger problems down the road.

Every herd is different, and the best plan depends on your operation, management practices, and the health challenges you're facing.

HEALTH TIP:
Parasites Don't Know It's Fall!

Cooler temperatures are here, but that doesn't necessarily mean fleas, ticks, and other parasites are gone!

A few things to remember this fall:
-Fleas can survive in protected environments, including inside your home.
-Ticks may still be active on milder days.
-Heartworm prevention remains important year-round, even when mosquitoes are less noticeable.

Keeping your pets on an appropriate prevention plan can help protect them through every season. Not sure if your pet's prevention needs to change with the weather? We're happy to help you find the right plan!
