Microchips: Tiny Chip, Huge Peace of Mind.

Collars and tags can fall off, but a microchip is a permanent form of identification that greatly increases the chances of a lost pet finding their way back home. In fact, microchipped pets are much more likely to be reunited with their families.

Today we're celebrating one of our own as she heads off to begin an exciting new chapter in veterinary school!

Ellie has been a valued part of our clinic team and community, and we've had the privilege of watching her work tirelessly toward this goal.

Missouri Was Home to One of the World's Most Amazing Dogs!

Have you ever heard of Jim the Wonder Dog?

Jim was an English Setter who lived in Marshall, Missouri, during the 1920s and 1930s. While he was an exceptional hunting dog, he became famous for something much more extraordinary. Jim amazed people by seemingly understanding complex commands in multiple languages, recognizing people he had never met, identifying specific vehicles, and even correctly predicting the winners of several Kentucky Derbies.

Thousands of people, including veterinarians, professors, judges, and reporters, traveled to witness Jim's incredible abilities firsthand. To this day, no one can fully explain how he did it, making him one of Missouri's most fascinating legends.

Whether you believe Jim had an extraordinary gift or simply possessed remarkable intelligence and intuition, his story is a wonderful reminder of the amazing bond we share with our dogs.

🔆Heat Safety Reminder for Your Pets & Livestock🔆

The summer heat is here, and it's important to keep all of our animals safe and comfortable during these hot days.

Here are a few simple tips:
-Always provide access to fresh, clean water.
-Make sure animals have plenty of shade or a cool place to rest.
-Limit exercise and strenuous activity during the hottest part of the day.
-Never leave a pet in a parked vehicle—even for just a few minutes.
-Watch for signs of heat stress, including excessive panting, drooling, weakness, vomiting, or collapse.

Livestock can also suffer from heat stress. Be sure they have adequate shade, clean water, and good airflow. If possible, avoid working or transporting animals during the heat of the day.

If you think your pet or livestock is experiencing heat stroke, it is a medical emergency. Move them to a cool area, offer cool (not ice-cold) water if they are alert, and contact us right away.

Missouri Cattle Producers: Have You Heard of Theileria?

An emerging cattle disease called Theileria is continuing to spread across Missouri. This tick-borne parasite infects red blood cells and can cause severe anemia in affected cattle. The disease is spread primarily by the Asian longhorned tick, which has now been identified in many areas of our state.

Clinical signs may include:
• Weakness and lethargy
• Pale gums, eyelids, or v***a
• Weight loss
• Decreased milk production
• Abortions
• Yellow discoloration of tissues (jaundice)
• Sudden death in severe cases

One challenge is that Theileria often looks very similar to anaplasmosis, making laboratory testing important for an accurate diagnosis.

What can producers do?
✔ Monitor cattle closely for signs of anemia
✔ Check cattle regularly for ticks
✔ Implement a consistent tick control program
✔ Work with your veterinarian if you notice pale animals, weakness, unexplained abortions, or unexpected losses

Unfortunately, there is currently no approved treatment or vaccine available in the United States, making prevention and early recognition especially important. Once infected, cattle may remain carriers for life.
