New Tank Syndrome is a very common problem faced by new aquarium owners. It usually happens in the first weeks after setting up a fish tank, when the biological balance of the aquarium hasn’t been established yet.

🐟 WHAT IS IT?
- In a new tank, there are not enough beneficial bacteria to process fish waste (ammonia and nitrites).
- As fish eat and produce waste, toxic levels of ammonia build up.
- This stresses the fish, damages their gills, and can even kill them if the problem isn’t recognised quickly.

🐟 CAUSES
- Adding fish too soon after setting up the tank.
- Overfeeding, which increases waste and uneaten food.
- Lack of water testing and cycling.
- Too many fish added at once.

🐟 Symptoms in Fish
- Gasping at the water surface (lack of oxygen due to ammonia).
- Lethargy or unusual hiding.
- Red or inflamed gills.
- Refusing food.
- Sudden fish deaths.

🐟 How to Prevent It
- Cycle the tank first; Run the aquarium with a filter, an ammonia source (and heater if tropical) for 2-4 weeks before adding fish, letting beneficial bacteria grow.
- Start small; Add only a few hardy fish at first. You can build stocks overtime.
- Test water regularly; Check ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate levels ideally using a liquid test kit instead of dip strips.
- Do partial water changes; This helps to dilute toxins. Always use a dechlorinator.
- Don’t overfeed; Feed only what the fish will eat in a few minutes.
