“He should be more social.”
“She should like being held.”
“Dogs love the dog park.”
“My last cat never cared about that.”
It is very easy to build expectations around the pet we imagined instead of the animal who is actually standing in front of us.
But good care starts with the individual.
What does this pet enjoy?
What makes them uncomfortable?
What helps them feel safe?
How do they communicate that they have had enough?
What environments allow them to succeed?
What pace works for them?
Two pets can live in the same house and need very different things.
That is not a problem to solve.
It is information to use.
Stop asking how your pet compares to the animal they “should” be.
Start building around the one you actually have.
