DID YOU KNOW: Smoky was a famous 4-pound, 7-inch-tall Yorkshire Terrier who served as a World War II war dog and is remembered as the first recorded therapy dog.
Found in an abandoned foxhole in the New Guinea jungle in 1944 and bought by Corporal William A. Wynne for two Australian pounds.
Smoky served with the U.S. Fifth Air Force, flew on 12 combat missions, survived over 150 air raids, and received eight battle stars. Crawled through a 70-foot-long, 8-inch-wide underground pipe in the Philippines to pull a critical communications cable, finishing a dangerous 3-day job in minutes.
Smoky also performed live tricks on television shows and helped spark national interest in the Yorkshire Terrier breed.
