Now THIS is how you properly take care of double-coated dogs! 🥰🥰🥰

Today I had the pleasure of taking care of two of the fluffiest Aussie Shepherd twins named Ollie and Arlo. ❤️

These two boys immediately objected upon arrival, barking at me like I owed them lunch money with Arlo growling at me with all his Aussie sass.

After their owner left, I spent roughly twenty minutes desensitizing with them so they could get comfortable with me, as I was told Arlo may need to be muzzled during his groom.

Ollie had a good deshedding bath at home a few days ago, so all this ball of fluff needed was a simple nail trim and sanitation trim. He didn't care for the nail dremol, but we got through it just fine.

Arlo needed a deshedding bath, nail trim and sanitation trim. He seemed to enjoy his body massage in the bath and didn't mind the blow dryer too much.

Nail trims, though? He was not about that life either, but he made it to the other side a-okay.

Best part of all? Arlo in fact did NOT need a muzzle during his groom. Winner winner, chicken dinner. 😎

Humanity over vanity. 😎

Does your double-coated pup need a good deshedding treatment and sanitation trim? DM or call/text me at 256-689-0195 to book your appointment today! I'll see you and your pup soon. ❤️💪😎

I will never be silent about this. I would like for you to take a look at a perfect example as to why you do not shave a double-coated dog, unless severe matting is in the picture.

Just a couple days ago, this Pomeranian was shaved down to the skin at a grooming salon out of town.

All that redness you see is 100% razor burn. This was entirely caused by not changing blades when they got too hot, coupled with improper technique. As a result, this poor pup is additionally suffering from irritation and now possibly long-term follicle damage which culminated into extensive veterinary bills.

Whether this pup fully recovers from the damage caused by the groomer remains to be seen, as it will take many months, if not over a year or two, for the coat to get back to some sort of normalcy, if at all.

Now you understand why I am against shaving double-coated dogs.

For those unaware, the pet grooming industry in the United States is 100% unregulated. No certifications required. If you have a bottle of shampoo, a slicker brush, clippers and a business license, you can legally call yourself a pet groomer. It's that easy.

Pet parents, this is why I encourage you to seek professional ethical pet groomers, whether they are certified or not. Forget about the price of services for now; asking about the groomer's credentials beforehand is a must. Look at their history and see if that groomer is the right fit for you and your pup.

As I stated yesterday, I refuse to compromise my integrity for a paycheck. Every pup who graces my salon gets treated with love, respect, and all the treats and I'm the happiest person in the world when a dog is in front of me.

Should something happen in my salon, it will be my legal obligation to make things right. Business insurance exists for a reason.

If your double-coated dog needs a good grooming session and relaxing spa day, please DM me or call/text me at 256-689-0195 to book now. You will not regret this, and I will see you and your pup soon!

Edit: I sincerely apologize for singling out the non-certified groomers who genuinely care. I have zero issues with supporting y'all as well.

I will do better. You have my word.

This afternoon I took care of a mischievous little teacup Yorkie named Nayra. ❤️

This was Nayra's second professional pet grooming appointment, and she needed a full groom and haircut.

Because this was Nayra's first full groom, I had to stress that her haircut may not be perfect. She needed to be slowly introduced to all my grooming equipment, from the shears and brushes to the nail dremol, as well as a slow introduction to proper handling to ease any stress.

The ultimate goal for the first groom or two is not necessarily achieve a perfect haircut, but to get your pup familiar with the grooming process and make them feel heard and wanted. The perfect haircut will come with time, patience and love; trust the process. ❤️

Welp, this is now the third time I am having bring this up and I will no longer be nice about it, and my most sincere apologies in advance for prioritizing your dog's health.

NO. I WILL NOT SHAVE YOUR DOUBLE-COATED DOG.

It is my duty as a certified professional pet groomer to help mitigate issues with your pup, not take away ownership responsibility completely. This is a major problem I have with pet ownership.

I had yet another person raise hell at me when I politely started explaining to her why shaving a double-coated dog is detrimental to the dog's health and she had the nerve to tell me I'm a lazy groomer.

The irony is strong, considering this same person told me she doesn't like brushing her shedding dog and would prefer to have it shaved.

bUt My DoG dOeSn'T lIKe BeInG bRuShEd. My dogs don't either, but I have a routine where I still take a few minutes out of my day to make sure their fur is in top shape.

A slicker brush (or rubber curry brush for short hair pups) and a metal comb costs roughly $25 total. All it takes to brush your dog is just a few short minutes out of your day.

For those wondering, the pup pictured is Byndi the Australian Shepherd, a perfect example of a double-coated dog. His owner knew from the day she got him you're not supposed to shave a double-coated dog, yet a previous groomer did it anyway due to lack of experience and knowledge, or simply just didn't care.

Once again I'm gonna leave this tidbit of information directly from the American Kennel Club's website, just in case anyone tries to argue with me, because this is a hill I will gladly die on.

-"Your dog’s coat actually acts as an insulator,” explains Dr. Jerry Klein, Chief Veterinary Officer for the AKC. “Shaving that coat to reduce shedding or supposedly to keep the dog cool also eliminates that insulating layer of fur, makes the dog susceptible to heat stroke, and can result in improper hair growth and the possibility of follicle damage. A dog’s fur coat protects him from sunburn and decreases his risk of developing skin cancer.

Shaving a double coat can also do long-term damage. When it’s shaved down to the skin, the undercoat hair will grow back faster, and sometimes will crowd out the slower-growing guard hairs. This can change the texture and color of a dog’s coat and make it appear patchy and unattractive."

End of rant. Thank you for coming to my TED talk. Please do better and have a blessed day.

🐾---Grooming School Pup No.9!---🐾

Meet Charlie the gentle giant hound mix, the last "easy" pup I took care of in professional pet grooming school.❤️

This was Charlie's first professional grooming appointment, I found out when the owner dropped him off. Because of how much he was pulling on his leash, my instructors were unsure of how he would be.

He could not have been more perfect for his nail trims, deshedding treatment, blow dry and final brushout. 😎

This dog also had double dewclaws on his back legs, which is relatively uncommon. Can't forget about trimming those, either. 💪

As stated above, the "easy" portion of my professional pet grooming training concluded with Charlie. I got down the very basics first: nail trims, baths, deshedding treatments and proper drying techniques for short coated and double-coated dogs.

The real test would begin with the next pup, a giant poodle. Stay tuned in to see him. 😎

🐾---Grooming School Pup No.8!---🐾

Discipline and patience are your two biggest allies if you want to be a successful pet groomer and luckily I have both. 😎

To those who aspire to join the pet grooming industry, at some point during your training, you will take care of a pup that will test your patience and skill and give you a run for your money, and I am no exception. 😅

This is Thor the Alaskan Husky, and I can confirm huskies are the Karens of the dog world.

It's a good thing his nails were already trimmed beforehand, because I spent roughly twenty minutes alone trying to shave his paw pads, like my hands were made out of spikes.

He didn't seem to mind his deshedding bath, but the blow dryer?? NOPE. He sang the song of his people with bare teeth and objected to the happy hoodie.

Despite his rough-housing and operatic vocals, we finally made it to the other side.

Make no mistake; if you put a dog in my presence, I am the happiest person in the world. No contest.

Two pups in one appointment? Yes, please! GIMME ALL THE PUPPIES! 🥰😁😎

Lemme introduce y'all to a tiny little weiner named Faarquad (🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣) and Russell the Old English Bulldog. These two inseparable brothers are some of the most loving and playful pups I have had the pleasure of taking care of. ❤️

I'm pretty sure Faarquad knows his weight when he jumps around and gives affection, but Russell? Not so much. 😅 Russell is built like a tank forged from the finest steel in the land, equipped with reinforced armor plates and a hint of sass. And fart gas. 🤣

Faarquad needed his nails trimmed and a Nasty Critter bath, and he decided to choose violence during the former. He was okey dokey during the bath and almost fell asleep during the blow dry.

Russell needed to be picked up into the tub for his deshedding treatment as he was disinterested in getting in himself, and of course he wanted to sit and sleep during the majority of his bath and coat blowout. Because of that, he now has a new nickname: Russell the Russet Potato.

The owners mentioned Russell was going to be an absolute bu****le during his nail trim, and they were in awe and dumbfounded when I told them he did very well. 😂

This was the most fun I've personally had in a while. Thank you Faarquad, Russell and your owners for making my day special, as well as Maggie the catahoula I took care of this morning and her owner. Y'all are the best. ❤️

This morning I took care of a fourteen year old catahoula named Maggie. ❤️

Maggie was in need of a nail trim and vigorous deshedding treatment, and to say my shop was in shambles afterwards would be a severe understatement. 😅

I really don't care about how much cleaning I gotta do; no amount of cleaning will compare to the love I have for you, Maggie. 😊

💯 percent good girl. I'll see you again soon, sweet baby. ❤️

My senior pup clients are the best. 🥰🥰

This afternoon I took care of a basset hound/black lab mix named Diamond, who is 15 years young. ❤️

This sweet baby needed a nail trim and Nasty Critter bath and now this gem is perfectly polished. 😎

Thank you for almost taking off my finger when you accepted my peace offering treats. I still love you, Diamond. 😁
