Everyone please welcome Lil Wayne, one of our very good boys and quite frankly, one of the biggest celebrities in our oncology department. 😎🐾

Lil Wayne started seeing our oncology team in April 2026 after being diagnosed with multicentric lymphoma. Since then, he’s been showing us exactly what it means to be a good boy while soaking up ALL the attention.

His specialties include:

🐾 Being extremely handsome
🐾 Accepting compliments from absolutely everyone
🐾 Collecting as many pets as possible
🐾 And most importantly… getting his butt scratched. 😂

Honestly, Lil Wayne doesn’t come to oncology for the attention.

The attention comes to Lil Wayne. 🐾 🤣

We’re so happy to have this sweet boy as part of our AVIMO family and love seeing his face come through our doors. ❤️

🐾❤️Meet Cinnamon & Otis — Two of Our Most Adorable AVIM&O Frequent Flyers!❤️🐾

Everyone at AVIM&O knows that some patients become more than just patients—they become part of the family. And Cinnamon and Otis are definitely two of those special faces! 🥰

🐶Otis, our handsome brindle Pit Bull mix, started his journey with us feeling incredibly anxious and uncomfortable. He was painful, and figuring out why wasn’t always straightforward. But with the gentle, compassionate care of our team and some excellent detective work by his internist, we were able to uncover several underlying causes for his discomfort and develop treatments to help him feel better.

And what a transformation it has been! ❤️

These days, Otis walks through our doors excited to see his AVIM&O friends—and, of course, eager to show off whichever toy he has brought along for the sole purpose of absolutely TERRORIZING IT. 😂🧸💥

🐶Cinnamon, Otis’s sweet tan Pit Bull mix sister, apparently decided she didn't want to miss out on the AVIM&O experience! She began her journey with us after developing a cough and is now being cared for by the same fantastic internist who treats her brother, along with our dedicated oncology team.

Cinnamon has her own collection of medical challenges, requiring ongoing treatment and careful monitoring. Through it all, she continues to be the absolute sweetheart that we know and love. 💕🐾

Together, Cinnamon and Otis—and their wonderful parents—have become very loved members of the AVIM&O family. Their journeys may take them through many different diagnoses, treatments, appointments, and challenges, but one thing will never change:

We’ll be right there with them every step of the way!❤️

Because being part of veterinary medicine isn't just about treating diseases. It's about getting to know our patients, celebrating their good days, supporting them through the hard ones, and caring for the entire family along the way.

September is National Su***de Prevention Month, a time to remind one another that mental health deserves the same care and attention we give every other part of our well-being.

Veterinary medicine can be incredibly rewarding, but it can also come with unique pressures, including long hours, emotionally difficult cases, compassion fatigue, and the weight of caring deeply for our patients and their families.

That’s why organizations like Not One More Vet, Inc (NOMV) are so important to our veterinary community. NOMV works to support veterinary professionals, promote mental health awareness and help create a culture where asking for help is encouraged and supported.

If you are struggling, please know that you do not have to face it alone. Reaching out for support is a sign of strength, not weakness, and there are people ready to listen.

Blood draws don’t have to be scary! At AVIMO, our team uses Fear Free techniques to help make procedures as comfortable and stress free as possible for our patients.

From gentle handling and calming voices to treats, cuddles, and finding the position that makes each pet feel most comfortable, we work with each patient to help reduce fear and anxiety.

Everyone meet Astrid! She is a current Oncology patient of Dr. Bardales at our Annapolis location, and she is known around here as the perfect potato girl! 🥔

Astrid started seeing us in October 2024 after being diagnosed with mammary gland carcinoma. She has since had two surgeries with our friends at Chesapeake Veterinary Surgical Specialists and is currently undergoing chemotherapy, which she is responding to very well!

While she is here, our team loves bundling her up and carrying her around like the baby she is. 😊

The video you will see in the next post is an example of a Fear Free approach to obtaining blood for her CBC and chemistry values. These blood tests help our team make sure Astrid is doing well and that it is safe for her to continue with her chemotherapy protocol.

We are so happy to see Astrid continuing to do well and are incredibly grateful that her owner chose us to help provide the essential care she needs. 💗

🔎🐾Meet One of Our Internist’s Most Important Tools: Ultrasound!🐾🔎

If veterinary internal medicine had a “bread and butter” piece of equipment, ultrasound would be it! 🩺✨

Ultrasound gives our internists a real-time look inside your pet’s body—without surgery and without radiation. It can provide valuable information that may help explain why a pet isn’t feeling their best.

So, what can an internist see with an ultrasound? 👀

🫀Heart: Ultrasound can evaluate the heart’s structure and movement, including the chambers, valves, and blood flow.

🫁Chest: Ultrasound can help identify fluid around the lungs and evaluate accessible areas of the chest.

🩻Liver & Gallbladder: We can look for changes in the liver, gallbladder abnormalities, inflammation, and other structural changes.

🫘Kidneys & Urinary Tract: Ultrasound can help identify changes in kidney structure, stones, urinary obstruction, and other abnormalities.

🍽️Stomach & Intestines: We can evaluate the thickness and layers of the gastrointestinal tract and look for signs of inflammation, obstruction, masses, or other changes.

🩸Spleen & Lymph Nodes: Ultrasound can detect changes in size, structure, and appearance that may help guide further testing.

💧Abdominal Fluid & Masses: Ultrasound can locate abnormal fluid or masses and can sometimes help our team safely collect samples for further testing.

🔬And sometimes, ultrasound helps us find the answers we didn't know we were looking for!

One of the biggest advantages of ultrasound is that it allows our internists to see organs in real time, assess their structure, and use those findings alongside bloodwork, X-rays, and other diagnostic tests to put the pieces of the puzzle together. 🧩🐶🐱

Ultrasound may not always give us the whole answer—but it is an incredibly valuable tool in helping our veterinary internists get closer to one. ❤️

What Does That Mean?

Anemia 🩸❓

You may have heard your veterinarian say that your pet is anemic but what does that actually mean?

Anemia means your pet has fewer red blood cells than normal or not enough hemoglobin to carry oxygen throughout the body.

Don't worry, we got you covered! What is hemoglobin? Hemoglobin is a special iron-packed protein inside red blood cells. It grabs oxygen in the lungs and moves it through the body. It also carries waste carbon dioxide back to the lungs and gives blood its red color!

Red blood cells are responsible for delivering oxygen to the tissues, so when those numbers drop, your pet may experience things like:

🐾 Tiredness or weakness
🐾 Pale gums
🐾 Decreased appetite
🐾 Faster breathing or heart rate
🐾 Exercise intolerance

There are many possible reasons a pet can become anemic, including blood loss, destruction of red blood cells, chronic disease and problems with red blood cell production.

That’s where an Internal Medicine specialist can help. 🩺

The goal isn't just to treat the anemia. It’s to figure out why it happened in the first place.

🐾💕 **Hi everyone! My name is Elara!** 💕🐾

I’m a sweet, silly, and very adorable English Bulldog, and I thought it was about time I introduced myself! 🐶👋

When I’m not busy being cute, you can usually find me enjoying long walks through the woods🌲🐾 or munching on my favorite treat in the whole world…peanut butter pupcakes! 🧁🥜 (Honestly, I think I deserve one every day.)

My mom is a Vet Tech Assistant at AVIM&O Hunt Valley, which means I have a pretty special connection to the veterinary world. 🩺💗 I’m happy to say that I haven’t had any serious reasons to visit my mom at work—which is exactly how I like it!

Although… I have had the occasional bout of diarrhea. 💩😂 Let’s just say my tummy sometimes likes to keep mom on her toes!

I’m hoping to keep my visits to mom’s workplace limited to friendly hellos and lots of tail wiggles rather than anything involving needles, surgery, or an exam table. 😉

I’m so excited to be part of the AVIM&O family and can’t wait to say hello to all the amazing people and pets! 🐾❤️
