The SPCA of Anne Arundel County provides humane care and adoption services for homeless animals in central Maryland.
🤍 Providing care regardless of age, breed or physical condition
🤍 Protecting from acts of cruelty and neglect
🐕🐕‍🦺🐈🐈‍⬛🐇🦔🦜🐁 Originally a society created to deal with the problem of stray dogs overwhelming the Eastport section of Annapolis, the SPCA has grown through the years to bec

ome the modern animal welfare organization of today. McCarthy was asked by the community to take over the presidency of the struggling, young organization. A strong force for animal welfare, he laid the foundations for the SPCA that were to see it through the decades ahead. The SPCA handled dog licensing and enforcement from 1936 to 1966, operating a fleet of up to six ambulances that were dispatched throughout the county to retrieve injured animals. The shelter in 1947It now houses our administrative offices, the spay and neuter clinic, and meeting spaces for activities such as volunteer orientation and dog obedience classes. In 1966 the county animal control division was established. Today Animal Control responds to calls in the county and picks up stray animals as well as investigating cruelty complaints. The SPCA takes in all voluntarily surrendered animals, providing shelter, medical care and adoption services. In 1974 the SPCA became one of the pioneers for low cost spay and neuter services. Peg Howard, a singular volunteer, donor, and board member, built and equipped our first spay and neuter clinic with her own money, making an extraordinary gift to the SPCA and the community. The current animal shelter, the Mary E. Parker Shelter, opened in 1986. Very modern for its time, the new shelter provided air conditioning, flexible runs, medical isolation rooms, and other updated facilities. Today the SPCA is a vibrant animal welfare organization. With our new online adoption application, starting the adoption process is easier than ever!

Nina 🤍 There is so much to love about this sweet Lab/Pit Bull mix! She loves toys, splashing in the water, soaking up the sunshine, and enjoying plenty of cuddles. She may be shy at first, but with patience, gentle encouragement, and a few tasty treats, Nina warms up into a loving and affectionate companion. 🐾💦

There is so much more to discover about Nina’s wonderful personality. Once she feels comfortable, she’ll happily show you just how sweet, playful, and loving she can be. She would love a patient family who will give her the time and support she needs to feel safe and confident.

Nina is looking for an adults-only home where she can be the only pet. If you’re ready to help her feel safe, loved, and cherished, she may be your perfect match! 🤍🐶

Interested in meeting Nina? Once your adoption application has been completed and approved, a meet-and-greet can be scheduled. An approved application remains active, so if Nina isn’t the right match, our team will be happy to help you find the pet that’s the best fit for your home and lifestyle.

Need a good mouser for your farm or barn? Or perhaps for your garden nursery or boatyard? Instead, how about an older & social cat that still isn’t a great cuddler but might be perfect for your store?

Meet the “Working Cats” at the Anne Arundel County SPCA. These cats may not jump in your lap or crave human attention, but they thrive with some freedom and can help around your farm or the shop. They can work in most any location where rodents are a problem, or where having a cat around as company will improve the appeal of your business. These cats will provide the labor and entertainment if you give them food, shelter, health care and love.

A farm owner on Kent Island who recently adopted 3 working cats says they are “catching mice” and “doing great.” She says, “In the mornings when we go out to feed the chickens they follow us from building to building.” The farm owner notes that the cats don’t threaten the chickens and that “They love the cows!” In exchange for their mouser duties her Working Cats have a whole room in a garage equipped with fans. One side of the enclosure is a wire fence & the cats have a cat door. These are cats that love their freedom!

Like most employees, Working Cats (WC) need a period of adjustment but the SPCA helps out by providing larger crates for them to occupy while they adjust to their new surroundings. Owners must agree to give them the same standards of care, shelter, food, & health checkups.

Each of our WC's are unique & staff can help identify the best cat for the right environment. Halsey & Nimitz pictured first are ready to pull themselves up by the bootstraps and work for the big man (you). 3 potential WC's aka The Three Tops named Topaz, Onyx & Pearl who are pictured next, would likely love a farm home, or maybe a boatyard! Another potential WC named Aster who is loaded with personality and craves attention, might work well in a store setting. Severn pictured last is an official WC, and ready to show you exactly how hardworking she is!

Remember, these employees are always on time and never complain!

Say hello to Smokey! 💚

This little guy came to the shelter through no fault of his own, just that pets were not allowed in his family's apartment.

Smokey was a bit nervous when he first arrived here, but he is opening up more and more as he gets to know us. He seems to be more comfortable with women, but if men go slow and are patient, he will make friends with them as well! Smokey absolutely loves going for walks and is a very clever guy. He is the only dog who has ever figured out how to slide open his kennel’s guillotine-style door to let himself into his outside kennel 😂

Smokey would thrive in a home with a patient but active family who is able to take him for lots of walks and stimulate him mentally!

🌺🌸Today’s Happy Tale is a follow up on Brooklyn and Bronx~

Their mom wrote, “I wanted to reach out again and thank you all for helping us with the adoption of these two precious kittens. We have had Brooklyn and Bronx for five weeks now and we are just so in love with these two! They are so bonded and just love each other so much. They do everything together and are so in sync. They love playtime with their wands, sunbathing in the windows, napping in their window hammock, grooming each other, chasing each other and following us around from room to room. We will be introducing the cat wheel to them soon! Fingers crossed!”

How wonderful to see the difference a few weeks can make as Brooklyn & Bronx settle in more and more. They are fortunate to have such a loving family and home. We are grateful for YOU and your decision to adopt two amazing rescue cats. Let us know how the cat wheel goes! 💖💖

Looking for a dog that would fit in with young kids? Meet Finley! 🩷✨

Finley is a beautiful 10 month old Rhodesian Ridgeback who came to the shelter due to landlord restrictions in her previous home. Finley is reported to be crate and house-trained and very social with people.

She is a gentle girl who is very calm and easy-going. She isn’t jumpy and would likely be great with young kids due to her laid-back nature! She is a very sweet dog, easy to leash up for her walks and a relaxed walker. She’ll happily accept pets and give you a big smile and some gentle kisses for some butt scratches.

She has so much to offer but her most redeeming quality is truly just how easily she would fit into a variety of homes with her laid-back personality!

ADOPTABLE: Sam, Cocker Spaniel mix (5 y/o)

Sammy is an affectionate and playful dog who lost his owner and is now looking for a new family. Sammy never spent much time with men, so he is still rather unsure about them. He’s been working with staff and is getting more comfortable with men every day! He is very friendly with women and loves to lean against your legs or sit right next to you to participate in whatever you are doing. Sammy also likes long walks and playing fetch!

- Only pet in the home
- Older teens (16+)

Meet Cane 🖤 a 9 month old Cane Corso puppy looking for his forever home!

Cane is a sweet boy learning about his place in the world. He is very affectionate and loves meeting new people. He came to us as a much smaller puppy so he is really growing into himself now that he’s a big boy who grew into his big paws 😂

He mostly walks well on a leash, knows commands like “sit” and “paw” and will happily show you them for a treat. He likes to look back on his walks to make sure that you’re still walking behind him as well.

Cane is a sweet gentleman most of the time but sometimes he likes to act like a Sour Patch Kid “first they’re sour, then they’re sweet!” when he’s in the mood to show his giant toddler side. Cane is very smart and thrives with structure and consistency. He needs an owner that can continue to work with him on manners and impulse control.

He is also very large and strong so he needs an owner that can physically manage him while on walks. He would love a family that can help him continue to build confidence and bring out the best boy we know he can be!

Breed experience with Cane Corsos or similar mastiff or giant breeds is preferred.

Today’s Happy Tale features Finny, (formerly Billie)~

His family shared an update, including photos of one happy pooch!

They said, “It will be a year in October since we adopted Billie and renamed him Finny.

“Finny is a really happy boy and a great addition to our family. He loves his backyard in Annapolis and enjoys long walks in the mornings and evenings in south Florida.

“I also included a photo from when he was the SPCA’s Pet of the Week before we adopted him.”

How wonderful to see Finny loving life! We enjoyed ALL the photos! Thank you for choosing adoption and for providing Finny with the best home. He’s one lucky dog! 🩵🐾

Adoptable 5 month old Olivia found herself at the shelter for simply just being a puppy ❤️‍🩹

This girl is as sweet as they come and has now been growing her confidence here with us! She is still a floppy puppy who trips over her paws when she walks. She’s already so smart and knows a few commands and will show you them if you have a treat nearby. She’ll also happily sit in your lap for snuggles and repay you with lot of puppy breathe kisses!

Olivia has lived with young children and other dogs and did well with them! She has not met any cats yet so we aren’t sure how she is with them.

Olivia would benefit from an active family ready to keep training her to provide that confidence she needs as a young pup! She already has so much to offer at such a young age and any family would be lucky to have her 🤍🐾
