SPCA of Anne Arundel County The SPCA of Anne Arundel County provides humane care and adoption services for homeless animals in central Maryland. In 1934 civic leader Albert H.
(875)

The SPCA of Anne Arundel County was founded in 1920. Originally a society created to deal with the problem of stray dogs overwhelming the Eastport section of Annapolis, the SPCA has grown through the years to become the modern animal welfare organization of today. McCarthyAlbert H. McCarthy was asked by the community to take over the presidency of the struggling, young organization. A strong force

for animal welfare, he laid the foundations for the SPCA that were to see it through the decades ahead. The SPCA handled dog licensing and enforcement from 1936 to 1966, operating a fleet of up to six ambulances that were dispatched throughout the county to retrieve injured animals. The first shelter building opened in 1947. The shelter in 1947It now houses our administrative offices, the spay and neuter clinic, and meeting spaces for activities such as volunteer orientation and dog obedience classes. In 1966 the county animal control division was established. Today Animal Control responds to calls in the county and picks up stray animals as well as investigating cruelty complaints. The SPCA takes in all voluntarily surrendered animals, providing shelter, medical care and adoption services. In 1974 the SPCA became one of the pioneers for low cost spay and neuter services. Peg Howard, a singular volunteer, donor, and board member, built and equipped our first spay and neuter clinic with her own money, making an extraordinary gift to the SPCA and the community. The current animal shelter, the Mary E. Parker Shelter, opened in 1986. Very modern for its time, the new shelter provided air conditioning, flexible runs, medical isolation rooms, and other updated facilities. Today the SPCA is a vibrant animal welfare organization. With our new online adoption application, starting the adoption process is easier than ever!

Otis and Buttercup had the best time today supporting Naptown Flea! They got to meet lots of people and showed just how good they are with other dogs (mostly based on their lack of care for standing so close to each other for 2 hours) 😂

Hi! Rue here! I had the bestest morning so I have to tell you all about it!

A volunteer told me I was going on Race team, we were going to the park and she was going to be my jogging buddy! I didn't know what that meant and I was a little scared at first but I saw how excited Charlotte and Onyx the little terriers were and they certainly look like they know how to have fun.

I was a scared to get in the car at first, but my jogging buddy got in first to show me it was okay and I hopped right in.
At the park I saw Charlotte and Onyx running like little maniacs, so I followed behind them, and boy I was right, they do have fun! Even though my jogging buddy said I couldn't meet them, and they seemed cool I was able to follow and could see them from a safe distance at water stop. I loved everything about the park, the running, the sniffing, rolling in the grass. I like passing and watching people and other dogs. Sometimes strollers and bikes got me a little scared, but I was still curious and learned they were okay. There was so much to see!

I also made a hooman buddy, Amy, who I am told coordinates all these wonderful excursions, and instantly bonded with her. She gives the best behind the ear scritches and I could have just sat with her the whole day.

After we were done, I wasn't scared of the car anymore and just jumped right up in the driver's seat. My jogging buddy said I was not allowed to drive, nor was I allowed to supervise when I tried to get in her lap when she got in, so I politely curled up in the passenger side and we went back so I could get my breakfast.

Thank you to our readers who shared bedtime stories with our adoptable cats and kittens at Thursday’s Bedtime Book Buddies. The animals loved the company of kind children and adults who talked with them and read them books. Pop-up books were an especially huge hit! 😻

📖 Spending calm time reading to our adoptable animals helps them relax and feel comfortable around lots of different people. This social time sets them up for success in their forever homes! 🥰

We appreciate Ms. Genevieve from Discoveries: The Library at the Mall who curated a collection of books focused on summer fun. 🌞🏖️🕶️

Our next Bedtime Book Buddies will be in September.

You’re my boy Blue! 🩵

Looking for a new best friend? Meet Blue!

A 10 month old Australian Cattle Dog mix who is beyond sweet! He absolutely adores everyone he meets and loves to snuggle up to people and try to sit on their laps!
He also has great leash manners while on his walks. He once encountered a turtle while on his daily walk and is so innocent that he ended up being afraid of the turtle 😂

Blue has no dog, cat or child restrictions, meaning he would fit into a variety of homes!

Apply today for this handsome little guy 🩵

🎀💞The Love Continues To Spread From Our Mother’s Day Campaign! 💞🎀

We are excited to add more kittens to our Paws & Petites: Named with Love Campaign! For Mother’s Day, our shelter held a fundraiser where supporters could help name an animal in our care through a donation. Those who participated received a personalized e-certificate, a photo of their named animal (shared after the campaign), and recognition in our "Named with Love" social media album💐

We are so grateful for all the kindhearted individuals who participated in our campaign, as you have directly made a difference. Not just through helping provide our shelter animals with the best standards of care, but through making a lasting change for animals everywhere in our community. Our team has been diligently working on naming kittens as they come into our care, and appreciate your patience throughout the process until your cutie gets named❣

While many of these babies are still too young for adoption, we currently have many wonderful adoptable animals waiting to find homes and hearts of their own! View them online at aacspca.org/adoptable-animal-search ❤
