Some of our fave people and collaborators asked if we’d like to help with a class project! We’re, technically, hanging out in an advisory role*, but diving into best practice survey design for threatened Michigan turtles with some college students.

Gonna be a fun semester!

We are *thrilled* that took the time to come learn about Conservation Detection and how (passionately) we believe dogs can play a valuable role.

It's no secret that our inspiration comes from pioneers like Sally Dickinson and her Spotted Lanternfly study or the community-based programming of the . They are leading the way in broadening impact! Being able to learn from their (fabulous) examples and translate into paws-on-the-ground action is a privilege.

Spotted Lanternfly Training tools!

I’ve been searching for a way to reduce the size of our training sources, BUT keep them easy to use and safe.

I poke around our thrift stores for all sorts of training inspo, so when I saw reusable keurig pods they seemed *perfect*! Already a very fine mesh, small in size, easier to hide, and GREAT odor access for the dogs. 3 for $1.50.

AND my sustainable self feels good about keeping things out of landfills. Although, if Keurig wanted to sponsor us and send us a bunch, we wouldn’t be mad! 😉

My dogs are currently trained to find all SLF growth stages, from egg to 3rd instar.

My first working partner. My absolute best guy. I trust that nose absolutely, because of our training. He’s always been such a clear communicator and a JOY to watch!

Tonight everyone worked a short problem in the car port. Complicated eddies, with the wind coming from the west.

Eastern Massasagua Rattlesnake!

By now, many Michiganders have heard about the man who was bitten by a rattlesnake in Oakland county. He made some choices (moving closer for a better photo) and the snake let him know they weren’t comfortable. He went to Michigan Medicine to receive the anti-venom and appears to be recovering.

As a listed threatened species, the EMR is a rather shy snake, though it does like to sunbathe. There are known populations in Washtenaw county, so there’s always a chance your doggos may get curious.

So, we did the research! If your pet gets bitten by an EMR, the emergency vets that *DO* stock anti-venom are:

- Emergency Vet Hospital in Ann Arbor
- Animal Emergency Center in both Novi + Rochester
- OVRS (on-hand, but expired due to nationwide back order)

Awareness is the first step, followed by giving them space & leaving them alone. We’ve personally seen juveniles in Local preserves, but they quickly moved away.
