Catnip contains a natural compound called nepetalactone, which interacts with scent receptors in many cats.

Some cats become playful and energetic, while others roll, rub, purr, or simply relax. The effects usually last about 10–15 minutes before wearing off. Interestingly, not every cat responds to catnip. Sensitivity is inherited, and about one-third of cats don't react to it at all.
