Sharing this from PJs breeder, Mary Beth, as I agree with this and I couldnt have said it better. The ONLY time Sassy has a harness on is for a particular purpose and short term. This is for scentwork/tracking only. There are other jobs that a harness is preferred such as therapy work so everyone is aware.
Hi Folks. This email is for all the new puppy owners. I am sharing information here that I discussed with you before your puppy went home. Now that you are settling in I'm sharing this info again. PLEASE, if you are using a harness PLEASE PLEASE consider a martingale collar. I am happy to have a conversation with you privately about it. I understand there may be some trainers that encourage harnesses. I absolutely do not. It is nearly impossible to correctly fit a dog properly as it their structure changes every day.
To understand the potential damage harnesses can do to a growing puppy, consider the following points:
Restricts Movement: A poorly fitted harness can limit a puppy's natural movement and development.
Causes Discomfort: An ill-fitting harness may cause chafing or irritation on the puppy's skin.
Affects Joint Health: Excessive pressure on joints can lead to long-term orthopedic issues.
Breathability Issues: Some harnesses may restrict breathing, especially if too tight.
Behavioral Impact: Discomfort from a harness can lead to anxiety or fear during walks.
Skin Injuries: Prolonged use of a harness that doesn't fit well can result in abrasions or sores.
