There has been a lot of talk about Leptospirosis lately. This is a bacterial infection that can spread through wildlife urine contamination, mostly in water sources. It causes kidney and liver damage and is also contagious to humans. At this time we are unaware of any cases in Anchorage, but pets traveling to rural places or enjoying activities such as hiking or fishing could come in contact with it. We now carry the Leptospirosis vaccine. If your pet is at a higher risk of exposure, we would recommend this vaccine but be aware that there is a higher chance of vaccine reactions occurring with this particular vaccine. Reactions include facial swelling and hives.
