Dang yall. June is over. With family visits for half the month and lots of in-person events on the weekends, I haven’t taken the chance to really celebrate PRIDE. So on the last day of the month that's exactly what I’m doing.

“Choosing” to be an ally never really felt like an active choice to me. It has come quite natural as someone who grew up in an environment they never felt they belonged in. Like a square peg trying to go in a round hole, finding connections with likeminded people in a small southern town was a challenge. Being taught at a young age to love and accept all but also hearing slurs, bad mouthing and general judgement has always been a conflict in my mind.

From this I learned to create my own set of morals with inspiration from the world I grew up in. Awareness of others lived experiences, realizing my own privileges and fully understanding that individualism is what makes people worth caring for has been key to discovering why going out of my way to make someone feel accepted is so important to me.

So in terms of Pupdog, I’ve had PRIDE flag collars since my first year in business. These have not been the most profitable or biggest sellers in Pupdog history, but what they do offer is invaluable to me. What I hold value in is seeing a person smile and point at the display in my booth. Watching them run over with excitement about feeling represented in a space they did not expect. Sometimes this translates to sales, sometimes not. But they know they are welcomed in my shop without anyone saying a word.

This is a year-round mission for Pupdog, not just one month. Your dog might be wearing our gear, but I want it to be clear we are also celebrating YOU.

It seems relevant to mention I'll be set up at the 7th Annual Mat-Su Pride celebration at the Alaska State Fairgrounds on July 11th. This event is being hosted by The Queen's Guard and if you attend please come by and say hi!
