The October lull is a myth, the bucks are moving. Get out and hunt!
Monday evening I got a call from a hunter who knew his hit was back and he wanted help. After his shot, he watched the buck for a bit and then snuck out of the woods knowing time needed to pass. He didn’t go and track the buck, as he knew that could jump him and push him further away possibly resulting in a lost trophy. After 3 hours from the shot, I flew the drone up to find the buck still alive and less than 100 yards away from where he was hit. We made a plan to leave him overnight and return in the morning.
Tuesday morning I flew the drone up, and found him about 50 yards from the prior spot. This time he was dead and had a young eagle and vultures checking him out. I flew the drone back and we successfully recovered the hunters trophy.
If you’re not sure of your shot, or know it didn’t go as planned, let me help you. Immediately after the shot watch what the deer does and where it runs to, check your arrow and the first few feet of blood to figure out next steps. Deer are tough and sometimes just need time. Don’t risk jumping your trophy and possibly losing it, give me a call and let me help you out!
