Another confirmed rabid bat. All dogs and cats should be vaccinated against rabies, even if they never go outside. It's the law, and it's a public health issue.

Two bats just tested positive for rabies in Niagara County.

Rabies isn't something that just happens to outdoor pets. Bats can and do get into homes, and bat bites are often imperceptible (a person in Canada died of rabies recently after being bitten by a rabid bat while sleeping).

Rabies vaccination is mandated by law, even for indoor pets. Rabies is a public health concern because it is fatal and can be transmitted to humans.

If you think your pet has been exposed to a wild animal, and especially if there's been a scuffle with a wild animal, you should be sure not to touch your pet with bare skin for at least two hours in case there is infected saliva on them, and seek veterinary attention (in general, rabies vaccinations should be boostered after contact with a wild animal or injury from an unvaccinated pet, even if the vaccine is current).

If you have a bat or other wild animal deceased in your home, do not destroy the head, and do not dispose of the body (and do not touch it with bare skin). Place it in a leak proof container and contact the Erie County Health Department (https://www3.erie.gov/envhealth/rabies-ratsrodents-vectors-arboviruses-and-related-information).
