Once upon a time, there was a sweet girl named Cali. In true Cinderella fashion, we are hoping that Cali’s Prince Charming is out there somewhere understanding that true beauty and worth are deeper than what superficial judgement sees.

Despite being mistreated by life, Cali remains hopeful that her good heart and patience will lead to a fairy tale ending. She dreams of a castle where a magical transformation will occur and set everything right. “I wish I may, wish I might, find my forever home tonight.”

Cali is a 10 year old beautiful calico cat with temporary hair loss on her back and tail and thickened skin on her eyelids and chin from a previous severe flea infestation. She was transferred here from another shelter where her inner beauty was overlooked. We guess that makes us her fairy godmother. Bibbidi Bobbidi Boo!

If you’d like this girl to make biscuits while sitting in your lap, apply to meet her at www.amesanimalshelter.org.

May 31st is World Parrot Day! Did you know that parakeets are parrots? The term parakeet is used to describe small to medium-sized parrots with long pointed tails. There are approximately 400 species of parrots. 115 of those are parakeets. Budgies, what we commonly think of when we hear the word parakeet, are the most common. There are 15 types of those.

Parakeets live from 5-15 years. When given consistent social interaction, they are affectionate and form deep bonds with their people. 7 month old Bon Bon is extremely friendly, steps up onto your finger, and loves sitting on your shoulder/head.

Bon Bon is ready and waiting if you think a parakeet is the right fit for you. Bon Bon is a male, by the way. You can tell by the blue color of the fleshy area above his beak.

Here’s wishing you a bright and joyful future! Apply to meet Bon Bon at www.amesanimalshelter.org.

Last week we drew attention to the amount of money that’s saved when adopting a dog verses buying. Now, the cats are demanding equal time; they’re a bargain, too!

People assume getting a free cat or kitten from someone is a good deal, when in fact, you get over $460 worth of services with each cat adopted from the Ames Animal Shelter.

Adoption also gives you a chance to visit with an animal first so you can decide if they’re the right fit. The cats want you to know that most are there through no fault of their own, and they are wonderful - a real steal.

What’s your favorite coffig ?

Lola, our tan and black, caramel macchiato colored girl and tri-colored cappuccino, Princess are a 10 month old bonded pair. They’ve been waiting for their forever home since March 31st.

Guinea pigs are small, gentle, social creatures and can be great pets. Before adopting a guinea pig, make sure you and your family are up for the commitment. Guinea pigs live for about 5 to 7 years and need daily attention and time out of their cage. They need companionship and do best living in pairs. If you're ready to get a guinea pig (or two), give us a call at 515.239.5530 to determine if a guinea pig might be the right pet for you!

Where Are They Wednesday!

Atlas, formerly Celestino, was adopted from the Ames Animal Shelter in July of 2025. He remains super playful, and loves to chase his little sister and fish toy around. He looks pretty comfy, too!

Bonnie was adopted at 11 weeks old a year and a half ago. She lives in Johnston with 2 doggie brothers and a cat who obviously adores her very much.

We love seeing our former friends so content in their new homes. Keep those updates coming!
