BQA ✅

25 BQA Certifications were completed Saturday at Provision Cattle Company under the guidance of Dr. Terry Engelken.

Beef Quality Assurance (BQA) is a national program which focuses on proper cattle handling, low-stress transportation, record keeping, and overall food safety.

BQA serves as a critical bridge connecting animal health, producer profitability, and consumer trust. While BQA is implemented by farmers and ranchers, vets are central to its ex*****on, training, and everyday success.

Elyse (VM4) and Dr. Jenna confirmed 3/3 pregnancies in an alpaca herd with the help of a very cute, very curious cria (brown and white) hovering over their shoulders.

🦙Fun Alpaca Reproduction Facts 🦙

- Females are induced ovulators (like cats!)
- A male's testicles are non-pendulous (like a cat or boar!)
- Alpacas mate in a prone position called "cushing"
-Gestation is variable in length
-Choanal atresia is common in crias (babies) - a fatal defect as alpacas breath entirely out of their noses!

Check out this article outlining differences between alpacas and llamas: https://njaes.rutgers.edu/fs917/

OR head over to PACALAND in Kelley, IA on September 26th and 27th to meet these alpacas and talk to Russ and Sherry about the species and their products!

Our home department, Veterinary Diagnostic and Production Animal Medicine (VDPAM), had an outstanding showing at the 2026 Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine Awards!
Two of the exceptional professionals recognized earlier this month are our very own Dr. Rachel Friedrich and Dr. Terry Engelken!

Dr. Friedrich is the recipient of the 2026 Mid-Career Achievement in Extension or Professional Practice.

Dr. Engelken is the recipient of the 2026 Outstanding Achievement in Extension or Professional Practice.

In addition, Dr. Pat Gorden was formally recognized for his appointment as Anderson Chair in Veterinary Medicine at the ceremony. This is one of few named positions at ISU CVM.

Congratulations to you all and thank you for your contributions to Field Services, Iowa State University, and your respective fields of study. Well done!
