Yesterday was tough. Aside from fielding calls for the typical situations (cottontail nests, wandering raccoons, fawns, etc.), it’s the cruelty cases that hurt my heart the most. Yesterday I received a call for four opossum babies who were left clinging to mom after she had been hit by a car (which is the reason my opossum total is now up to 11 orphans). As I was preparing to meet the finder to pick up the babies, the facts came in. The mother had nine babies who at this age are riding clumsily on her back while she looks for food. Normally an endearing and precious site. However, she was in the wrong place with the wrong human at the wrong time. While mom was crossing an energy drink shop drive through, a car passed by. After seeing mom harmlessly crossing to get to safer ground, this driver turned their car around and ran her down. Video footage shows the driver made no effort to slow or swerve. Blood and babies strewn about the pavement, a woman named Andrea stopped to help after the driver sped off. This family was obliterated. Four babies were gathered up, one was so severely injured it needed euthanasia. I now have the three remaining survivors of a previous family of ten. They have been cleaned of the blood and are quietly resting hoping to forget what they endured. I’m sharing this with you to encourage you to be the good in the world. That is the only cure to outshining the darkness. Be the light and do good to all.❤️

Little did I know when making the original post, her overnight antics were caught on a motion activated camera on my desk. Measures have been taken to assure she is secured and that will be the last of her explorations! Enjoy!

When you come into the office and find one less opossum than you should, a frantic search begins! The escapee was found safe and sound, tucked into a bin of stuffed animals. She was quietly sleeping off her midnight adventures and was not happy to be disturbed!😂❤️🥰

You will see more turtles on the move as weather warms up and females move to nesting sites. They will be in the dangerous position of needing to cross roadways to reach these sites. Please be alert while driving as many are stuck by cars during this time.

During nesting season turtles will be crossing roadways to travel to their preferred nesting sites. Did you know that turtles travel every year (sometimes for decades) to the same nesting site? Please be turtle aware while driving! If you need assistance, please reach out to your local wildlife rehabilitatior!

Turtle Crossing Season has arrived! ⚠️🐢

Many turtle species are on the go as they move between habitats and seek out nest sites. As you encounter turtles in roadways this spring and summer, remember the following:

✅Help turtles cross the road (in the direction they seemed to be heading) if it is safe to do so
🚫Do NOT relocate turtles - removing them from their territory and natural habitat decreases their chances of survival
🚫Do NOT take turtles home as long-term or temporary pets - let them be wild!

Be on the lookout and lend a helping hand when possible!

You can also support turtles, and other vulnerable wildlife, when you join Kentucky Wild. Learn more and become a member at FW.KY.GOV/KYWILD.

This little one picked up by Ames Animal Shelter is under observation for mobility issues. Cameras are a great way to gauge patient progress. Although rear mobility can’t quite be seen here, you can see this little one thoroughly grooming herself! Lisa Brix☺️

Hey everyone! Opossum babies are rolling in and they just love to cuddle in fleece pouches as it provides warmth and comfort. Are there any local friends who have extra fleece laying around who could make some opossum pouches? They can be very basic! Thank you!!

Trying something new this year to make the highly stress prone cottontails feel more comfortable while in rehabilitation! Momma cottontails line their nest with fur to insulate babies. Here you can see this little one looking snug as a bug.
