Today came with an important reminder for me: Our human schedule means nothing to horses lol. We've been carefully filling the schedule as much as humanly possible to take advantage of the beautiful weather. Today was no exception, I had the time slots organized down to the last minute, homeschool classes, Tiny Tot Classes, Lessons, Training horses and Consignment horses on the docket. Mid lesson today one of the training horses was struggling with regulation, his high energy seeped over to Audra's pony and we had two very high alert and rammy boys in the arena. Our motto with training horses is always that an activity takes the time it takes. Meaning if a horse is struggling with accomplishing a task we break it down to smaller chunks and work until we can end on a successful note with a well-regulated horse. A session can therefore take 5 minutes or 2 hours. That meant workers took over the lesson, I shifted to lead with the training horse and pony Petey got to enjoy a groundwork session too. At one point in exasperation, I snapped at Audra and said, "what are you doing?!?" Ya'll she was doing her absolute best; her pony was feeding off my high energy and need to keep all trains running on time, nothing to do with Audra. She sort of shrugged it off at me and I had to give her a huge apology for being snappy. Some days ponies and horses will struggle for no obvious reason at all. While we did groundwork together with her pony we talked about how the colder weather and a few days off work can give a horse a little more energy and spice. Does it make the horse naughty? No, they just need a little energy re-direction to be successful and most importantly it is not anyone's "fault". The extra 20 minutes working both horses thankfully gave me the opportunity to apologize to Audra for making her feel like she'd done something wrong with her pony and create an opportunity for them to successfully complete their ride together. She took none of his earlier sass personally and helped him tackle everything that came their way the rest of the ride with such grace. She's a straight up rockstar. The training horse ended his session much more relaxed and sighing with relief that none of the scary things he encountered today ate him alive ;). If you're working a green horse or a seasoned horse in the freshly cold weather give yourself some grace, stay consistent, keep learning together, and maybe learn from my over-zealous choices and don't schedule every last second of your time hahahaha. We tell our groundwork students that any given task isn't the end goal. Meaning we don't really care if the horse crosses a teeter totter or stands on the platform, our goal is to work on a partnership with our horse, much like our children. Some days it will come easy, and other days you'll be groundworking a spicy pony while apologizing to your daughter for being too intense. . .

For our first ever horse camping excursion we went BIG. 11 horses and 14 riders. I had the cutest co-pilot for this ride. Such a fun time! We were super proud of all the horses and riders 🤩. If you’re dreaming of hitting trails with your family but need help to get started we’re happy to help. We have tiny tot sessions and 1 hour group lesson openings every day except Saturdays.
