Google Review:
Earlier in the summer I hired Holly Days to help me with my outdoor pond, which was suffering greatly from algae and despite having air bubblers for oxygenation, I lost several fish. Fortunately, I could remove my turtle and remaining fish to a temporary pond, but my main pond was beyond anything I could fix on my own. Holly Days came recommended on a neighborhood page and had wonderful reviews and competitive pricing. Soon after going over my pond's needs and the estimate, two young men came and drained, cleaned, and refilled the pond. They even helped me with my irksome filter which I could not get running properly. Every step of the process was described by Chuck, and I received a full folder of the work done and information on pond maintenance going forward. Over three months later, the pond still looks great, filter is still running, and my surviving fish and turtle have had a wonderful summer! I am so, so grateful to Chuck and his team! I would not hesitate to hire them again in the future.

Seems like I have been asked this question a lot recently, here is my best advice.

Water hyacinths and water lettuce have worked hard all summer, but these tropical plants cannot handle frost. Plan to remove them from the pond’s surface before the first frost arrives. If they are already turning yellow, brown, or mushy, take them out sooner.
🌡Watch the forecast.
If a frost advisory is issued, remove them ahead of that cold night, even if they still look green. Browning water lettuce or soft, collapsing hyacinth leaves are signs that it is time to act.

Why is this important?

🌿 **Less muck:** Dying leaves and roots can sink and collect on the pond bottom.

🐟 **Better conditions for fish:** As plants rot, the breakdown process uses oxygen your fish need.

💧 **Fewer nutrients feeding algae:** Removing the plants takes the nutrients they absorbed out of the pond before decay releases them back into the water.

Lift out the whole plant, including its roots, and scoop up loose pieces. Bag them for disposal, and never release them into streams or other natural waterways.

A little cleanup now helps your pond head into winter in better shape! Have questions about fall pond care?

We’re happy to help at Holly Days Ponds & Aquatics.

COOLER WATER? SWITCH TO WHEAT GERM!

As pond water cools, fish digest food more slowly. Wheat germ food is easier to digest, making it a great choice for cooler weather.

When should I switch?
As water approaches 50°F - 55°F, begin switching. Feed small amounts while fish are actively eating and remove leftovers.

When should I stop feeding?
Many formulas recommend stopping around 47°F - 50°F. Always follow the package directions and check water temperature, not air temperature. A pond thermometer is recommended to know your pond water temperature.
If the fish stop eating completely, you know it’s time to stop feeding.

Can I use it all year?
Absolutely Yes! Stop feeding when water gets too cold though.
