Happy Ugliest Dog Day! 🐕❤️ Today is about celebrating the beautifully imperfect, uniquely charming, and incredibly resilient pets that steal our hearts.

Take a look at the reigning 2025 World’s Ugliest Dog Champion, Petunia! This sweet, hairless English-French bulldog mix overcame a rough start in life and severe neglect. Thanks to dedicated rescue groups and veterinary intervention—including surgery to fix an elongated palate so she could breathe comfortably—she is now living her absolute best life. At High Plains, we know that every wrinkle, underbite, and quirky feature tells a story. Unconditional love doesn't need a perfect pedigree! You may have heard recent news reports about the New World screwworm, a flesh-eating fly that has recently been detected in the southern United States. The female fly lays eggs in open wounds, and the resulting larvae (maggots) feed on living tissue, causing painful wounds, infection, and potentially life-threatening illness if left untreated. Dogs, cats, livestock, wildlife, and even people can be affected.

While the overall risk to most pets remains low, it is important to:
✔ Check your pet regularly for wounds or skin injuries
✔ Keep wounds clean and protected
✔ Contact us promptly if you notice a wound that is worsening, draining, or contains visible larvae (maggots).

Good news!
Dogs receiving Credelio Quattro have an added layer of protection. The FDA has conditionally approved Credelio Quattro for the treatment of New World screwworm infestations in dogs, making it one of the available veterinary tools to help combat this parasite.

If your dog is not currently on a monthly parasite prevention program, contact us to discuss the best options for keeping your dog protected.
