“Learn to SEE, not just to look”— Brent Graef. Those words have been echoing in my head all weekend. Brent dropped that simple phrase on us after we turned around and looked behind us, asking what we actually saw in that moment.

Naturally, most of us just scanned the space on the first try, missing the subtle details right in front of our faces. But he had us do it a couple more times, turning our attention inward and outward, peeling back the layers of our own assumptions. With every single repetition, the picture changed. We started noticing the micro-adjustments, the tension points we had glossed over, and the quiet shifts in posture that completely altered the environment.

It is amazing how much of the world passes us by simply because we are using our eyes without engaging our minds. Walking away from this clinic, I realize the real work is learning to quiet the noise in our own heads so we can finally witness what is actually happening in the horse and in the room.

While Brent was here, he helped me with a greener horse that I hadn't done much with in awhile.

The last day we worked together, as I lead her through the pasture gate he said, "From here to the barn, you can feel if she's ready to be saddled or not."

Then, once we were in the barn he asked, "What's one way you might know if she's ready to ride? You could ask, is she ready to trim? That's something you can feel out, you have experience there. If she's ready to trim, she's ready to ride."

She had lead to the barn nicely. Her eyes were soft, her breathing was good and had stayed steady. She felt so much more with me than when we had started a few days earlier. She was standing quietly and square, with a leg in every corner. I knew if I asked for her feet, she would give them easily and softly.

She was ready to ride and we did have a great ride.

What he reminded me of throughout that session is how interconnected everything we do is. The way they lead can tell you a lot about how they'll probably trailer load. How they are with their legs being handled can tell you a lot about how they'll feel about you being on their back. If we're really paying attention, our horses can tell us a lot about how they're feeling, what their tendencies might be, and what kind of support they might need from us...sometimes just in our walk from the paddock to the barn.

So many of us take our horses for granted. We get complacent. We stop feeling back to them. Then we miss a lot of what they've been sharing with us. Then we wonder why we have troubles.
