Nothing like getting some scouting done while you’re on the day job!

I’m fortunate enough to drive through multiple counties every week, and I’m always keeping an eye out for new country, travel corridors, and spots worth coming back to.

Who else’s eyes wonder when traveling?

The Utah Trapping Convention is coming up September 11th & 12th!

Swing by and get stocked up for the upcoming season. With a strong fur market and plenty of excitement heading into this year, it’s shaping up to be a great one!

See you there!

Was going through old photos today and came across this spot from the past.

Why does this spot scream bobcat?

Thick cover meets open sagebrush—what I like to call “food plots.” These areas create natural edges that bobcats like to travel, with several pinch points along the way. Add in plenty of rabbits, and you’ve got the three things every cat needs: food, cover, and an easy travel route.

There are plenty of other things I look for, but these are a few that make this an Apex Predator perfect location.

Sometimes, boys and girls, being a dad means when the ol’ lady says, “Stay right here, I’ll be back in a minute,” you stay right there. 😂

Meanwhile, the trapline is calling your name and you’re thinking about all the sets you could be checking.

Here I was just wishing I had one more hand… Dad duty never ends! 😂

Turning things black today!

Who are the procrastinators who think getting all their trapping gear ready just hits different at 11:30 PM the night before opening day? 😂

Here’s a better video for everyone who has been asking about my trap preparation process. Hopefully, this gives you a clearer look at how I start prepping traps.

Here’s a little motivation to knock out that honey-do list before trapping season! 😂

The last thing we need is an unfinished projects keeping us off the line. Our only focus this season is making sets and putting fur on stretchers.

I had the honor of meeting and visiting with Joel Blackeslee at the NTA this past week. It was a privilege to spend time talking with someone who has earned the respect in the trapping community.

One topic we discussed in depth was travel paths—a subject that is often overlooked but can make one of the biggest differences in your success as a trapper.

Finding the high-traffic routes that predators naturally use can dramatically increase your catch numbers.

Predators travel much farther than most people realize. If you can identify where they’re consistently moving before season begins, you’ll already be one step ahead.

The key is simple: preseason scouting.

Don’t wait until opening day to start learning your ground. Invest the time now to scout, locate natural travel corridors, identify fresh sign, and mark productive locations. When the season opens, you’ll have a plan instead of starting from scratch.

The most successful seasons begin long before the first trap is ever set.
