The cat…uh, rat?…is out of the bag. 15 rats just hit the website, and 8 are already called for. I just emailed 43 wait listers and I’m ready to see how fast these babies find new homes.

Surprise!

Many animals, rats included, can store s***m to use for later. Today, Velvet proved that for all of us when she gave birth to 12 new babies while still weaning her first 10. This is not an ideal situation, as we like to let our moms regain strength before having a second litter, but Velvet and all 22 of her babies are healthy.

Btw this is just a mesh lid from an empty tank for reptiles and is in no way used in the rats day-to-day activities. Just where I set these babies for this quick photo before returning them to mom.

In a surprise twist, 3 of Velvet and Wilbur’s babies have turned out to be DUMBO eared! Wilbur (standard eared) has sired 5 litters for us, none of which presented anything but standard. This is Velvet’s first litter and she’s standard eared, so I naturally assumed all of the babies would be standard eared, but NO! We have 3 little dumbo babies (who opened their eyes today to boot). Very exciting day at Pie Town Rattery today!

Velvet and Wilbur’s babies have their first coat now! There are five standard coat babies and four Rex babies. Some of these guys have already been claimed, so stay tuned to the website to see who becomes available for adoption in a few weeks.

Did you know, rats kick their legs when you scratch in just the right spot, just like a dog? Mona’s litter was sleeping in my hand and I was rubbing the boy’s ear when I found out they do! I had to try and get it on video.

Our website is currently down. I am working to get it back up but it looks like that may take until Wednesday at the latest. We are still here, don’t worry!

Velvet has 11 babies in her nest as of this week, and they’re a good mix of standard and rex. I can’t wait to see how their coats come in. Their dad has a beautiful standard coat that is longer and softer than most others. Mom is a red rat with a unique coat that is more fluffy than wiry.

These babies are so adorable. Both parents are black eyed Siamese, and the coloring on these babies is phenomenal. I can’t wait for them to open their eyes and start exploring, they are so sweet.
