CONTINUING TO SHARE HW+ SURVIVORS:

My baby Hana is heartworm negative ❤️
if anyone remembers her story from August we almost lost her while going through treatment. She got the pro heart 12 preventative injection in May and her first and only Melarsomine injection in August… after she had the reaction and almost died we did not put her through the last two injections.
We are thanking god she is still with us and heartworm free!

CONTINUING TO SHARE HW+ SURVIVORS:

I just wanted to offer some words of encouragement. Archie has officially graduated and tested negative. The entire process felt long and hard in the middle of it, but now that we are through, it went by fast and it was 100% worth it. I was so scared at the beginning so I thought this might help some people who are just starting the journey.

We rescued him at 4 years old in February of 2025 and he tested positive at his first vet appointment. We have no idea how long he had the disease before this. He is a big and energetic dog so I was worried sick about keeping him calm.

We did the 3 shot protocol. What made things worse was that he needed to be sedated for each vet visit due to aggression towards the vet (he wore a muzzle to every visit but was too squirmy to complete the shots while awake). Between the sedation wearing off and the pain from the shot the first day after each shot was tough. But, after one day he seemed to be back to normal!

We did not crate him during the exercise restriction period since that seemed to stress him out even more. He got the occasional zoomies in the house and I panicked every time worried about his heart rate. We used peanut butter on a lick mat to get him to stop and lay down. But he was completely fine in the end. Not saying that it’s a good idea to get your dog excited on purpose but I’m hoping that this info will calm anyone’s stress about potential for a few short bouts of activity.

Good luck 👍🏻 I’m so relieved that he is now heartworm negative. And glad that we trusted the vet’s recommendation for the 3 shot protocol.

APRIL is National Heartworm Awareness Month, dedicated to educating pet owners about the dangers of heartworm disease—a severe, often fatal condition caused by parasitic worms transmitted via mosquito bites.
It affects dogs, cats, and ferrets, making annual testing and year-round prevention crucial for the health and well being of your pet!
