🐶 Small dogs and big dogs don’t age at the same pace.

In general, smaller breeds tend to live longer, while larger and giant breeds often reach their senior years earlier.

That doesn’t mean size tells the whole story. Genetics, breed, body condition, nutrition, exercise, preventive care and individual health all influence how a dog ages.

A Chihuahua may still be going strong well into its teens, while a much larger dog can begin showing age-related changes years earlier.

The important part is adjusting care as your dog gets older: regular vet checks, maintaining a healthy weight, appropriate exercise and paying attention to changes in mobility, appetite, sleep or behavior. ā¤ļøšŸ¾

Different sizes. Different aging timelines. Same need for good care.

Fruit can be a healthy occasional treat for many dogs, but preparation matters. šŸŽšŸ‰šŸ«

Before sharing fruit with your dog, wash it thoroughly, remove any unsafe pits, seeds, cores, tough skins or rinds, and cut it into small, manageable pieces.

Some good options include apples without the core and seeds, blueberries, strawberries, banana, seedless watermelon, mango without the pit, and small amounts of peeled orange.

āš ļø One important correction to the graphic: GRAPES should never be given to dogs, even if they're seedless. Grapes and raisins can cause serious kidney injury, and there is no reliably safe amount.

Cherries also require extra caution. The pits, stems and leaves should not be eaten, so other dog-safe fruits are often simpler choices.

Fruit should remain a treat rather than replacing a complete, balanced diet. Keep portions small, especially because fruit naturally contains sugar.

šŸ“ Safe fruit + proper preparation + moderation = a better treat.

And when you're unsure whether a particular food is safe, check with your veterinarian before sharing it.

Does your dog curl up in a tight ball, stretch across the entire bed, or insist on sleeping with their head propped up? šŸ¶šŸ’¤

Your dog’s favorite sleeping position can give you useful clues when choosing a bed they’ll actually enjoy.

🐾 Curlers often enjoy round beds with raised, cozy edges.
🐾 Stretchers need enough space to fully extend their body.
🐾 Back sleepers may prefer a wide, flat cushioned surface.
🐾 Dogs that rest their head on something can benefit from a bed with bolstered edges.
🐾 Burrowers often love blankets, cave-style beds, or other cozy covered spaces.

But sleeping position isn’t the only thing that matters. Choose a bed large enough for your dog to move comfortably, with supportive materials appropriate for their age and mobility. Senior dogs or dogs with joint problems may particularly benefit from a supportive, easy-to-access sleeping surface.

And don't underestimate washable covers. Dog owners know why. šŸ˜‚

The best dog bed isn't necessarily the fanciest one. It's the one your dog chooses to sleep in night after night. ā¤ļø

Dogs often communicate discomfort long before they bark or growl. 🐶

A tucked tail, ears held back, repeated lip licking, yawning, freezing or turning away can sometimes mean, ā€œI need a little space.ā€

No single signal tells the whole story, so watch your dog’s entire body and the situation around them.

Noticing these quieter signals can help us respect their boundaries and build trust. ā¤ļøšŸ¾

How you store your dog’s food matters more than many people realize.

A sealed container, a cool dry spot, keeping the original bag inside, and checking the expiry date can all help protect freshness. Open bags, heat, humidity, dirty scoops, and direct sunlight can do the opposite.

Freshness does not just depend on what you buy. It also depends on what happens after you open it.

Not every police dog is chosen for the same reason. These breeds are often used because they combine intelligence, confidence, athletic ability, and strong working drive.

Belgian Malinois and German Shepherds are popular because they are highly trainable, fast, alert, and versatile enough for patrol, detection, and search work. Dobermans and Dutch Shepherds are valued for their focus, agility, and strong work ethic. Rottweilers and Boerboels are often associated with protection roles because of their power, presence, and loyalty.

That said, police work is never just about breed. The most important qualities are temperament, nerve, health, handler connection, and the ability to stay calm and reliable under pressure. Different jobs need different strengths, which is why agencies choose dogs based on both the task and the individual dog.

Why does your dog lick you? There isn’t just one answer. 🐶

Licking can be part of social bonding, a way to get attention, an interesting taste on your skin, or simply a behavior your dog finds soothing.

Dogs may also lick themselves when grooming or settling down.

But context matters. Sudden, repetitive or obsessive licking can sometimes be associated with itching, discomfort, nausea, stress or another medical issue.

Brief licking from a relaxed dog is usually very different from nonstop licking that comes with redness, limping, vomiting or obvious distress.

One behavior. Many possible meanings. The whole situation tells the story. 🐾

The front of the dog food bag is marketing. The label is where the useful information lives. 🐶🄣

A good place to start is the nutritional adequacy statement. Look for food that is labeled complete and balanced for your dog’s appropriate life stage.

The guaranteed analysis gives information about nutrients such as protein, fat, fiber and moisture, while the calorie statement helps you estimate how much energy your dog is actually eating.

The ingredient list can also be useful, but it shouldn’t be judged by one ingredient alone. Ingredients are listed by weight before processing, and terms like ā€œmealā€ or animal by-products aren’t automatically signs of poor nutrition.

Use the feeding guide as a starting point, then adjust based on body condition, activity and your veterinarian’s advice.

The best food is the one that safely meets your individual dog’s nutritional needs. 🐾

A healthy weight isn’t about making your dog look ā€œthinā€ or ā€œbig.ā€ It’s about keeping their body in a condition that supports comfortable movement, healthy joints, and everyday energy. šŸ¶ā¤ļø

One of the easiest checks is to look beyond the number on the scale.

At an ideal body condition, you should usually be able to feel the ribs without pressing hard, see a visible waist from above, and notice a gentle abdominal tuck from the side.

If the ribs, spine, or hips are very prominent, your dog may be too lean. If the ribs become difficult to feel and the waist starts disappearing, extra body fat may be building up.

Thick-coated breeds such as German Shepherds can make visual checks harder, so using your hands to feel body condition is especially important.

Every dog is different, and weight alone doesn’t tell the whole story. If you notice a significant change in your dog’s shape or weight, your veterinarian can help determine a healthy target for them.

The goal isn’t a perfect number. It’s a strong, comfortable dog who can keep doing the things they love. 🐾
