This month, we are featuring hybridized breeds: breeds that came from breeding 2+ breeds that eventually became a breed which can breed true to its standard. (The ultimate goal of any hybrid breed is to eventually have sufficient genetic diversity and type stability to exist without continued outcross to parent or other breeds). This week: The Havana Brown. This distictive-looking cat had its origins with British Siamese breeders who wanted to create a solid brown (chocolate) cat with Siamese type. They used black domestic (non-pedigreed) cats for the solid pattern. Some of the earlier cats were exported to the US, where breeders primarily worked with additional solid black domestic cats to develop the breed. For this reason, the Havana Brown's head and body structure is completely different than the slinky Siamese body. Read more about this breed's history at https://cfa.org/havana-brown-article-1991/

(The ultimate goal of any hybrid breed is to eventually have sufficient genetic diversity and type stability to exist without continued outcross to parent or other breeds). This week: The Burmilla. Originally an accidentally mating between a male chinchilla Persian and a European Burmese, this breed has the features of both. From the Persian: the silver pattern, including the green eyes and eyeliner, and the long hair (in the longhair division). From the European Burmese, it received the head structure, the robust body, and short hair (in the shorthair division).
