The Most Important and often Overlooked Tool in Dog Training -
One thing I’ve learned over the years working with dogs is that training isn’t just about teaching sit, down, place, or heel. Those things matter, but they’re only part of the picture.
Every time you put a leash on a dog, you’re communicating. Your dog is paying attention to your body language, your timing, your confidence, and your consistency. They’re looking to see if you’ll provide direction when they’re unsure and guidance when they’re distracted.
Many of the behavior problems people struggle with aren’t because the dog is stubborn or trying to be difficult. More often than not, the dog is confused, overstimulated, lacking structure, or unsure of what is expected of them.
Dogs thrive when communication is clear. They do their best when they understand the rules, boundaries, and expectations. That’s why training isn’t just about obedience, it’s about building trust and a relationship your dog can rely on.
Over time, the leash becomes more than a tool. It becomes a way for you and your dog to work together, understand each other, and move through the world as a team.
The longer I train dogs, the more I realize that while we’re teaching them every day, they’re teaching us too. Patience, consistency, accountability, and the value of being present are lessons dogs reinforce constantly.
At the end of the day, the goal isn’t just a dog that follows commands. It’s a dog that trusts you, understands you, and can confidently navigate life by your side.
