❄️🐾 WINTER IS COMING! Is Your Pet Ready for the Cold? 🐶🐱

As the temperatures begin to drop here in Western Pennsylvania and the holiday season approaches, the team at Center Animal Clinic wants to help you keep your four-legged family members safe, comfortable, and healthy!

Winter brings plenty of cozy moments, holiday celebrations, and maybe even a little fun in the snow. But it also brings some seasonal health risks that every pet parent should know about.

Here are a few important reminders and some helpful tips from our team! ❤️

❄️ 1. Protect Those Paws!

Snow, ice, and the chemicals used to melt them can be tough on your pet's paws.

🐾 Wipe your pet's paws and belly after outdoor walks to remove salt and ice-melting chemicals.

🐾 Consider pet-safe ice melt around your home and protective booties for sensitive paws.

🐾 Watch for cracked paw pads, redness, or excessive licking.

🌡️ 2. Cold Weather Affects Pets Differently

Not every pet is built for freezing temperatures!

🐕 Small dogs, short-haired breeds, puppies, and senior pets may need extra protection outdoors.

🐈 Keep cats indoors during extreme cold whenever possible.

🐕‍🦺 Watch for shivering, weakness, or reluctance to walk. These may be signs your pet is getting too cold.

And remember, even pets with thick coats need a warm, dry place to rest!

🩺 3. Winter Is a Great Time for a Wellness Check!

Did you know that some health conditions can develop without obvious symptoms?

Before the busy holiday season, consider checking with your veterinarian to see whether your pet is due for any important preventive care.

✅ Wellness Bloodwork: Helps evaluate liver and kidney function, blood sugar, and other indicators of overall health. Especially valuable for senior pets.

✅ Heartworm & Tick-Borne Disease Testing: Yes, ticks can still be active during warmer winter days! Staying current on recommended testing and year-round prevention is important.

✅ F***l Testing: Intestinal parasites don't disappear just because temperatures drop.

✅ Urinalysis: Can help identify certain urinary and kidney concerns, particularly in aging pets.

✅ Arthritis & Mobility Evaluations: If your pet seems slower getting up, hesitates on stairs, or struggles with slippery surfaces, it may be time to discuss joint health.

Not every pet needs every test. Our veterinary team can recommend the right screening based on your pet's age, medical history, and lifestyle.

🎄 4. Holiday Safety: A Few Things to Keep Out of Reach!

The holidays are exciting, but some festive favorites can be dangerous for pets.

🚫 Chocolate, grapes, raisins, xylitol-containing sweets, and alcohol.

🚫 Fatty holiday leftovers and cooked bones.

🚫 Tinsel, ribbons, electrical cords, and breakable ornaments.

🚫 Holly, mistletoe, and lilies. Lilies are especially dangerous for cats!

🚫 Antifreeze, which is extremely toxic even in small amounts.

If you suspect your pet has swallowed something toxic, contact a veterinarian or emergency animal hospital immediately.

❤️ 5. Don't Forget Your Senior Pets!

Cold weather can be particularly challenging for pets experiencing arthritis or reduced mobility. Soft bedding, warm resting areas, shorter outdoor trips, and nonslip rugs can make a tremendous difference.

Sometimes what appears to be your pet simply "getting older" may actually be a treatable or manageable medical concern.

🐾 BONUS PRO TIP FROM CENTER ANIMAL CLINIC!

Planning to travel over the holidays or have guests staying with you?

Make sure your pet's identification and microchip contact information are current, medications are refilled, and vaccinations are up to date if boarding or traveling.

A little preparation now can help prevent unexpected problems during the busiest time of the year!

🐾 One Decision Today Could Save Your Pet's Life Tomorrow. ❤️

No one plans for their pet to become sick or injured.

A sudden emergency, unexpected surgery, chronic illness, or even a cancer diagnosis can happen when you least expect it. Unfortunately, these moments often come with significant veterinary expenses that many families aren't prepared for.

That's why pet insurance is one of the best investments you can make—especially when your pet is young and healthy.

✅ Lower monthly premiums when enrolled early
✅ Coverage before unexpected illnesses develop
✅ Greater financial peace of mind during emergencies
✅ The ability to focus on your pet's care instead of the cost

Pet insurance is even more valuable when combined with annual wellness exams, routine laboratory screening, and regular dental care.

🩺 Annual Exams & Lab Work
Many diseases—including kidney disease, diabetes, thyroid disorders, liver disease, and certain cancers—can be detected long before your pet shows obvious signs of illness. Early detection often means simpler treatment, better outcomes, and lower overall costs.

🦷 Dental Care
Dental disease affects the majority of adult dogs and cats. Routine dental cleanings help prevent painful infections, protect vital organs, reduce future treatment expenses, and improve your pet's quality of life.

Preventive care + pet insurance is one of the smartest combinations for keeping your pet healthy while helping protect your family from unexpected veterinary expenses.

🐶🐱 Don't wait until something happens. By then, it may be too late for insurance to cover a condition that already exists.

Give your pet the protection they deserve—and give yourself peace of mind.

📞 Talk with our team about preventive care recommendations and explore pet insurance options that fit your family's needs. Your future self—and your best friend—will thank you. ❤️

🐾 Is Your Pet Due for a Wellness Exam? 🩺

One of the greatest gifts you can give your pet is preventive healthcare.

Many illnesses don't show obvious signs until they've progressed, but during a comprehensive physical exam, our veterinarians can often identify subtle changes that may indicate a problem long before your pet appears sick.

Here's what we recommend:
🐶🐱 Healthy adult pets: A wellness exam once a year
❤️ Senior pets (typically 7 years and older): A wellness exam every six months

These routine visits allow us to:
✔️ Monitor weight and body condition
✔️ Listen for heart murmurs or abnormal lung sounds
✔️ Evaluate joints and mobility
✔️ Detect dental disease before it becomes painful
✔️ Identify skin, ear, or eye concerns
✔️ Check for lumps or masses
✔️ Recommend appropriate laboratory testing to detect early kidney disease, liver disease, diabetes, thyroid disease, and other conditions before they become advanced

Pets age much faster than we do. Waiting until they're showing signs of illness often means the disease has already been present for months.

By scheduling routine wellness exams, we have the opportunity to detect concerns earlier, begin treatment sooner, and help your pet enjoy a longer, healthier, and happier life.

📞 If your pet is due for their annual or senior wellness exam, give Center Animal Clinic a call at 724-375-7026. Our team would be honored to help keep your furry family members healthy for years to come.

❤️ Because preventive care today can make all the difference tomorrow.

☀️🐾 July Heat + Happy Pets = Safe Pets! 🐾☀️

Summer is in full swing, and while we all enjoy spending time outdoors, our furry family members need a little extra help staying safe in the heat!

Here are a few simple reminders to keep your pets healthy this summer:

🌡️ Avoid the hottest part of the day. Walk your dog early in the morning or later in the evening when temperatures are cooler.

🐾 Protect those paws! If the pavement is too hot for your hand after 7 seconds, it's too hot for your pet's paws.

💧 Keep fresh water available at all times. Whether you're at home or on the go, hydration is essential.

🚗 Never leave your pet in a parked vehicle. Even with the windows cracked, temperatures inside a car can become life-threatening within minutes.

🌳 Seek shade and take breaks. Outdoor play is fun, but frequent breaks help prevent overheating.

🐶 Watch for signs of heat exhaustion:
• Excessive panting
• Drooling
• Weakness or lethargy
• Vomiting or diarrhea
• Bright red or pale gums
• Collapse

If you notice any of these signs, move your pet to a cool area, offer cool (not ice-cold) water, and contact your veterinarian immediately.

❤️ A little extra caution goes a long way in keeping your best friend safe this summer.

Stay cool, stay hydrated, and enjoy the sunshine!
