Project Second Chance Dedicated to rescuing, rehabilitating & finding homes for homeless dogs from PR & high kill shelters We aren’t your typical rescue.

Project Second Chance is a 501(c)(3) is an Alexandria-based nonprofit dedicated to rescuing, rehabilitating, & finding forever homes for homeless dogs in Puerto Rico, disaster hit areas, high kill shelters or in emergency need. In addition to providing transport to DC/MD/VA for adoption, we also cover medical costs, spay and neuter stray dogs in Puerto Rico, and run feeding routes for stray dogs that would otherwise starve on the streets. We believe kindness matters and in supporting the local community. Since Hurricane Maria, we have saved over 3.000 homeless dogs. And, during the pandemic, we have raised over $20,000 to support local businesses in the Alexandria community through our pay it forward campaign. Through this effort, we invited families applying for a rescue dogs to spend $25 or more at local businesses in lieu of an application fee to our rescue. It was a huge success and made a direct impact on our local community. When we rescue dogs off the streets of Puerto Rico, from high kill shelters, or take in dogs in dire need of medical treatments, we invest extensive time, resources, and funds to get each dog ready and healthy for adoption. Not only do we cover transportation costs which can include flights, long drives, and multiple transfers; but all of our rescues receive comprehensive medical care (including specialty care when needed), vaccinations, micro chips, deworming, and multiple veterinary check ups from the moment we rescue them to the moment they reach their new family’s home (and sometimes after!). To keep the adoptions accessible to all families willing to give our rescues the best home, our adoption fee never covers the amount that we invest in each dog, which is why your donations are critical to continue our mission.

❤️ A Little Bubba Update! 🐾

The more we get to know Bubba, the more we wonder how this sweet boy almost lost his life.

His body is covered in scars—on his neck, belly, sides, and legs. It’s heartbreaking to see, and we can only imagine what he’s endured. If only he could tell us his story. 💔 But Bubba isn’t looking back. He’s too busy enjoying the good life!

He’s doing wonderfully in foster care, gets along beautifully with the other dogs, loves his little walks, and has perfected the art of napping.

He also loves helping his foster mom with the laundry! 😂 Apparently, Bubba discovered the dryer full of warm blankets and towels, helped himself to the entire load, and made a cozy little bed for himself. Smart boy!

It’s almost impossible to believe this gentle, loving, ridiculously perfect dog was nearly euthanized. His body may carry the scars of his past, but his heart is still full of love. ❤️

And if Bubba has his way, his biggest problem from here on out will be waiting for the next load of warm laundry.

Well… plot twist. Larry is officially available for adoption again. 🐾

Larry had a family lined up, but his adoption ultimately didn’t move forward. So this very good boy is back to searching for the forever family he was meant to find. His brother Lenny and sister Edith are also available for adoption.

These three are now about 6½ months old and are getting bigger, goofier, and sweeter by the day. Larry and Lenny are currently having the time of their lives in foster care, playing, exploring, and generally enjoying being puppies.

They are crate trained, housebroken, affectionate, gentle, and very smart. Because they are active young dogs who love to run and play, we are looking for homes with securely fenced yards and fencing high enough that they cannot jump or climb out.

Larry, Lenny, and Edith are all available for adoption through Project Second Chance and ready to find families of their own.

Maybe their people just haven’t seen them yet. ❤️ Please share and help us change that. 😍

Bubba update: foster life looks pretty good on him. ❤️

Our sweet potato is settling beautifully into his foster home and getting lots of love while he heals. In just a few days, we’ve learned some very important things about Bubba: pillows are good, blankets are better, couches are excellent, and naps should be taken very seriously.

He is a wonderfully low-key guy who is happiest curled up somewhere soft with his foster family nearby. And honestly, we think all this sleeping is his body finally realizing that he is safe. He has a quiet place to land, a warm bed, a full belly, and he doesn’t have to stay alert anymore. He can just rest.

He is doing great with the kids and continues to show us what an incredibly sweet boy he is. And then there is dinner. 😂 Bubba gets so excited when he realizes food is coming that his tail starts wagging, his whole butt joins in, and he practically knocks himself over trying to contain his happiness.

Physically, he is already starting to feel better too. His sores are healing, and his skin infection is calming down with antibiotics. There is still more veterinary care ahead, but he is moving in exactly the right direction.

A few days ago, Bubba was five minutes away from losing his life.

Today, he is napping under blankets in his foster home, wiggling himself sideways over dinner, getting spoiled while he heals, and reminding us every day that he really is the bestest boy. ❤️🐾

And somehow, tonight, the stars aligned for Bubba.

He was scheduled to be euthanized at 6:00 p.m. I was working behind the scenes to get him tagged and saved, Michelle was able to drop everything and race to the shelter, and Jessica stepped up to foster him.

Michelle got there at 5:55.

Five minutes.

Five minutes between Bubba being gone forever and getting the chance to have a whole life.

And I am so grateful we got there.

Bubba is basically an enormous, ridiculously handsome potato with a head the size of a small planet. 😂 He was found as a stray, but it’s hard to imagine this boy ever belonged nowhere because he loves people hard. He leans into affection, wants to be close, and despite everything he has apparently been through, he is incredibly sweet.

He also needs us. He is underweight, has sores on his tail and legs, needs to be neutered, and needs veterinary care, good food, and a whole lot of love.

But the thing that got me tonight was how much he slept.

He fell asleep in the car after Michelle picked him up from the shelter. He fell asleep when he got to me. Then he fell asleep again on the ride to Jessica’s house.

It felt like his whole body finally realized: I’m safe now. I can rest.

No shelter noise. No countdown. No uncertainty. Just warmth, a soft place to land, and people who wanted him.

He is going to sleep very, very hard tonight.

Tomorrow we start putting this sweet potato back together. If anyone would like to help with his veterinary care and recovery, we could really use the support.

At 5:55 tonight, Bubba still had a deadline.

UPDATE: he’s safe with us!

Bubba needs us today. 💔

For some reason, this sweet face stopped us in our tracks. Bubba is on the euthanasia list today, and we are trying desperately to get him out of the shelter and give him the chance he deserves—a chance to know what it feels like to be safe, loved, and part of a family.

The shelter has evaluated Bubba, and he was respectful and appropriate with other dogs, showed no food aggression, and was wonderfully responsive to his handler. He definitely loves his snacks—which should make winning him over pretty easy. ❤️

Bubba has so much love and life ahead of him. We can save him, but we need an immediate foster commitment in order to pull him.

If you can open your home to Bubba, even temporarily, please reach out ASAP. Today really is the difference between life and death for this boy. 🐾

MEET SIMON & WALTER 🐾❤️

Simon and Walter are two Mini Aussiedoodles looking for a new home together due to unfortunate circumstances. They have been very loved, well cared for, and are truly a bonded pair.

Walter is almost 6, about 10 lbs., and the smaller, more poodle-looking of the two. He is easygoing, affectionate, healthy, and described as an all-around good dog.

Simon is 5, about 15 lbs., and has the beautiful merle coat and more of an Aussie look. He’s a total snuggle dog with a big personality, loves his toys, and likes to “mumble” when he has something to say.

Both are neutered, microchipped, crate trained, and have done well around older children.

We would love to find these best friends a wonderful home where they can stay side by side. ❤️

Gladys found her forever family. 💕 Our sweet six-month-old Goldendoodle absolutely hit the jackpot — a wonderful mom and dad who are ready to spoil her, plus two little brothers to grow up with, play with, and love.

She has always been such a happy, affectionate girl, and seeing her surrounded by a family who already adores her makes saying goodbye a whole lot easier. We have a feeling Gladys is in for a lifetime of adventures, cuddles, and being very, very loved.

Happy adoption day, beautiful girl. You found exactly what we hoped for. 🐾❤️

Some stories take a little longer to find their happily ever after. ❤️

Arlo and Edna have been on quite a journey with us. We rescued them as young puppies after they had been left outside in a snowstorm. They were the only survivors, having lost their mom and siblings, and it took time, patience, and a whole lot of love to get them healthy.

From the beginning, these two were special. They are two of the sweetest, most loving Labradors we have ever had the privilege of fostering, and their bond with one another is just as extraordinary. We knew we wanted them to stay together—even knowing that finding a family ready to welcome two Labs would take longer. A few potential adoptions fell through along the way, but we never stopped believing that the right family was out there.

And they were. ❤️

After having Arlo and Edna with us for so long, saying goodbye was certainly hard. But this is the part that makes every difficult day of rescue worth it: watching two beautiful souls you love walk into a home where you know they will be loved just as deeply.

Arlo and Edna have found an absolutely wonderful family, and we could not be happier for them. We can’t wait to hear about all of their adventures and watch them grow up surrounded by people who already adore them.

This is why we rescue. 🐾❤️

Meet Lenny!
We’re a little late with this introduction, but we promise Lenny was worth the wait. ❤️

Lenny arrived last week and is the newest member of our doodle crew—and this 17-week-old, 35-pound bundle of curls is an absolute love bug.

Lenny seems to believe everyone he meets is a new friend. He loves people, wants to play with other dogs, gets along wonderfully with his siblings, and is just an all-around happy, affectionate puppy.

And underneath all those curls is a pretty impressive little gentleman. Lenny is already crate trained, doing well going potty outside, and has lovely manners for such a young pup. He’s playful, affectionate, and very content just being part of whatever is going on.

At 17 weeks and already about 35 pounds, Lenny is going to be a big boy, so we’re looking for a family ready for all the fun—and size—that comes with a growing doodle puppy. Homes with securely fenced yards are preferred so Lenny has plenty of safe space to run, play, and get those puppy zoomies out.

Lenny is looking for his forever home. ❤️

🐾 COME MEET THE DOODLES! 🐾

Next Saturday, Project Second Chance will be at Frankie’s in Old Town for an adoption event — and this one will be focused on finding forever homes for our doodle puppies! ❤️

Larry, Edith, Gladys, and Lenny will be there and ready to meet you!

These pups are just four months old and already about 30–35 pounds, so keep in mind that these are going to be big dogs! We would love to find families prepared for a larger, active dog, ideally with a fenced yard and/or a good plan for regular exercise, training, and activity.

We also have other wonderful smaller dogs available for adoption, but Saturday’s event will be focused on the doodles.
