Project Second Chance Dedicated to rescuing, rehabilitating & finding homes for homeless dogs from PR & high kill shelters We aren’t your typical rescue.

Project Second Chance is a 501(c)(3) is an Alexandria-based nonprofit dedicated to rescuing, rehabilitating, & finding forever homes for homeless dogs in Puerto Rico, disaster hit areas, high kill shelters or in emergency need. In addition to providing transport to DC/MD/VA for adoption, we also cover medical costs, spay and neuter stray dogs in Puerto Rico, and run feeding routes for stray dogs t

hat would otherwise starve on the streets. We believe kindness matters and in supporting the local community. Since Hurricane Maria, we have saved over 3.000 homeless dogs. And, during the pandemic, we have raised over $20,000 to support local businesses in the Alexandria community through our pay it forward campaign. Through this effort, we invited families applying for a rescue dogs to spend $25 or more at local businesses in lieu of an application fee to our rescue. It was a huge success and made a direct impact on our local community. When we rescue dogs off the streets of Puerto Rico, from high kill shelters, or take in dogs in dire need of medical treatments, we invest extensive time, resources, and funds to get each dog ready and healthy for adoption. Not only do we cover transportation costs which can include flights, long drives, and multiple transfers; but all of our rescues receive comprehensive medical care (including specialty care when needed), vaccinations, micro chips, deworming, and multiple veterinary check ups from the moment we rescue them to the moment they reach their new family’s home (and sometimes after!). To keep the adoptions accessible to all families willing to give our rescues the best home, our adoption fee never covers the amount that we invest in each dog, which is why your donations are critical to continue our mission.

Clementine’s journey to her forever home wasn’t the easiest one. This sweet girl came to Project Second Chance as a tiny puppy fighting for her life after parvo. Thanks to incredible veterinary care, a whole lot of love, and her own determined spirit, she made a full recovery and quickly became the happy, playful puppy she was always meant to be.

Yesterday, Clementine’s next chapter officially began.

She found a wonderful family who fell in love with her long ears, sweet personality, and goofy nature. Judging by the smiles in these photos, we’d say the feeling was mutual.

We are so grateful to her adopters for opening their hearts and home to this special girl. After everything she has overcome, seeing Clementine head off to a life filled with love, adventures, and family is exactly the happy ending we hoped for.

Congratulations, Clementine. Your forever family was worth the wait. ❤️

Popcorn and Kernel are officially adopted — together! ❤️

From the beginning, we hoped these two sweet puppies would find a family willing to keep them together, and today that wish came true.

These adorable pups were full of energy, personality, and endless kisses. They kept us smiling every day and quickly stole our hearts.

The truth is that Popcorn and Kernel hit the jackpot. Their new family is incredibly kind, loving, and deeply committed to rescue. Not only do they get to stay together, but they also gained a wonderful big brother, Pepe, who has already welcomed them into the family.

Nothing makes us happier than seeing dogs find exactly where they belong, and we could not be more excited for these two as they begin their next chapter.

Rudy deserved better than the life he had before rescue.

When we found him on the streets of Puerto Rico, he was filthy, exhausted, underweight, covered in painful skin rashes, and clearly suffering. The worst of the damage was hidden inside his mouth — severe dental disease from years of neglect and survival on the streets.

His teeth are broken, decayed, infected, and worn down to tiny little nubs. Our veterinarian believes the wear is consistent with a dog who likely spent years chewing on rocks or other hard debris just trying to survive and find food. He’s currently on antibiotics to help control the infection, but medication is only buying him time. He now needs extensive specialty dental care to finally make him comfortable and pain-free.

But what’s been most heartbreaking — and beautiful — to witness is who Rudy became once he realized he was safe.

When he first arrived, all he wanted to do was sleep. He would fall asleep instantly in your lap or in your arms so deeply that you could carry him to bed without him even waking up. For nearly two months, he mostly rested on soft blankets and little beds, like a dog who had never truly been able to relax before.

And slowly, Rudy started healing.

You can see it in his eyes.

Look at how tired and defeated they were when we rescued him compared to how bright and alive they are now. The difference is what safety, love, rest, and care can do for a soul that has spent far too long just trying to survive.

His skin healed. He gained weight. His coat grew in. He learned that he’s safe. He learned that he will never suffer again.

Now he wanders the yard sniffing around in the sunshine. He wanders around the rescue with the other dogs. He’s part of a pack. He cuddles beside them for naps. He’s started doing tiny playful trots and little snorty sounds when he’s happy. His personality is emerging piece by piece now that survival is no longer his full-time job.

He has made an incredible transformation already, but he still lives with constant pain from the condition of his mouth. Specialty dental care is incredibly expensive, especially for a case this severe, and we are asking for help getting Rudy the care he desperately needs.

She has been officially diagnosed with:
• Chronic Cuteness
• Advanced Big Ear Syndrome
• And a mild case of “will steal your heart immediately”

Meet Arlo 💛

Arlo is a 3½-month-old yellow Labrador puppy with the sweetest soul and the goofiest personality. He may have been the smaller one in his litter, but don’t let that fool you—he’s catching up quickly and will grow into a beautiful, medium-to-large Lab.

Arlo is the perfect mix of cuddly and playful. He loves to be close, soak up affection, and then bounce right into play mode—especially if his sister Edna is involved. These two absolutely love to romp, wrestle, and tackle each other, and it’s as adorable as it sounds.

Nothing gets Arlo more excited than dinnertime (seriously, it’s his favorite event of the day), but he’s just as happy chasing toys or being part of whatever you’re doing. He’s got that classic Lab personality—happy, affectionate, and just a little bit goofy in the best way.

He’s also doing wonderfully in his crate and is settling nicely into routines, which will make the transition into his forever home that much smoother.

Arlo would thrive in a home ready for a growing puppy—one that will continue his training, give him plenty of playtime, and of course, lots of love. In return, you’ll get a loyal, fun-loving companion who will be by your side for years to come.

Meet Edna 💛

Edna is a 3½-month-old yellow Labrador puppy with the sweetest face and the biggest paws—seriously, this girl is going to be a large, beautiful Lab when she’s fully grown.

She’s everything you’d hope for in a Lab puppy: playful, curious, and always ready for fun. Edna loves her toys, gets very excited for mealtime (as she should!), and will happily accept treats as her love language. She has that classic Labrador joy—she wants to be part of everything and is always up for an adventure.

Edna’s story makes her even more special. Her mom was a purebred Labrador who gave birth and was left outside in the cold. Edna and her brother Arlo were the only survivors, and she’s been making up for that tough start ever since with a whole lot of love and resilience.

Meet Popcorn & Kernel 🍿❤️

Some puppies just make you smile the second you meet them—these two are exactly that.

Popcorn—Poppy for short—(our sweet little girl with that rich, rusty coloring) and Kernel (our adorable little boy) are 13-week-old siblings who are as gentle and cuddly as they come. They’re not your typical Chihuahuas… they’re easygoing, affectionate, a little goofy, and always ready to be part of whatever you’re doing.

They follow you around like little shadows, curl up close whenever they get the chance, and keep things fun with their playful, happy personalities. And when it comes to dinner and treats? Let’s just say they’re very enthusiastic.

They absolutely adore each other and would love to stay together if possible—two tiny best friends figuring out the world side by side—just 5 lbs each and full of love 💛
