A puppy’s critical socialization period with people, places, surfaces, noises, basically the world around them, in controlled, supervised, not overwhelming settings, runs between 3 to 14 weeks of age. It doesn’t end there, but this is a time when building sociability and confidence, while reducing fears in our puppies is so important. That’s why the American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior (AVSAB) and other top behavior professionals recommend that socialization and training start right away with your new puppy once they’ve had their FIRST round of puppy shots. Here’s AVSAB’s science-based position statement in support of early puppy socialization:
