It's fireworks season.
For those of you with puppies especially, it's time to do some desensitization/acclimation work - like, DAILY, and NOW. If your puppy hasn't heard them before, you'll start with playing fireworks on your phone or TV, at a very low volume at first, and while they're doing something fun. You can use an app called PupStanding (it has tons of other noises too), or, the youtube link below. Work up to louder volumes, play it all the time, and name it when you first play it - we say something like "surprise!" or "heads up!" to let them know there's going to be something startling, but it's all just a game/drill, and everything is ok.
For adult dogs who are already fearful of fireworks, you can do a bit of this, but, be very careful that it's not scaring them. This won't help as much for already-fearful dogs, and we strongly recommend a private session for us to help you help your dog handle the fireworks season as best as possible.
Also, for puppies or adults, we have a list of natural calming tools we recommend - ask us up front, or email us, and we can get that to you.
Good luck, and put this in your calendar to practice, puppy owners, if you want a shot at having a dog who isn't fearful of fireworks. Trust us... this works, and you can have that dog, if you start now and handle their first fireworks season as best as possible. Our best recommendation though for any dog, and especially those who are already fearful, is to get them away from the fireworks on the 4th itself. Plan a mountain day or a overnighter somewhere if you can... your dog will appreciate it.

Firework noise desensitization for dogs and puppies. You can help get your dog used to firework noises by slowly exposing them to low-level noises. Play this...

You already know we're all about reading dog food ingredients. I also recommend reading YOUR OWN food's ingredients. Example? Sprout's frozen waffles. Organic, but, also contains "chemicals including furfuryl alcohol, which is known to the state of California to cause cancer, and acrylamide, which is known to the state of California to cause cancer and birth defects." I'm sorry, what the F***? Why is this in our food? Not good enough, Sprouts waffles.

Emmy Lou just finished her first three days of day training with me here at home, and here is our first check-in session with Mom. Miss Emmy is looking great so far, demonstrating her loose-leash walking and "wait." I personally, and Mom especially, are so proud of this little girl already! She has been an incredible doggie student, and both have been such a joy to have as clients and to work with. Thanks, and see you next week, Emmy Lou!

[PS - here's a "trainer tip" for your dog... actually, let's make it three. LOL.
1. Wear your dog or puppy out a bit first, if you're working on loose-leash walking and want to have faster success.
2: If you're using a front-attaching "no-pull" harness, clip the leash to the front/chest, (NOT the back), and, I ALWAYS recommend clipping the leash to the collar as well (doesn't matter how; just leash clip on both collar and front ring on harness).
3. PRACTICE. Yes, there's a lot more too it. So much that I can't go on here about all of the leash-walking secrets I have up my sleeve for your dog at the moment. Ha. But. Yes, unfortunately, walking nicely on the leash involves more practice than you'll usually need to teach your dog most skills, so, you need to just put the time and effort in, but, going back and forth in the same area. Don't go further. You get to use about five houses' worth of distance, going back and forth on the sidewalk or in the street or wherever you are in the moment, and you practice just walking together as a team. Start there, and see what happens. Good luck, Doglanders, and feel free to share this with anyone you know who's starting loose-leash walking work with their dog... I aim to post more info again soon on this topic, if you all are interested in more.].

Talk to you soon, Doglanders...

So incredible. AWESOME job, Julie, and such brave dogs for what they're dealing with and having to have overcome (from being feral for however long in their lives)... tell them I'm proud of them, and we can't wait to see them relax and learn to love life with humans even more than they knew possible. Keep up the good work.
