After getting into material he shouldn’t have ingested, Jemez underwent a successful endoscopic foreign body retrieval at Roadrunner, helping him avoid surgery and take the fast track to healing.

Using a flexible camera and specialized instruments, our team was able to safely visualize and remove the material directly from his stomach.

Not every foreign body can be managed endoscopically, but when appropriate, it can be an excellent minimally invasive option for both patients and their families.

Foxtails may look harmless, but these dry grass awns can quickly become painful once they work into a pet’s ears, eyes, nose, paws, or skin.

In New Mexico, foxtail injuries become more common during the warmer months, especially after hiking, trail walks, or time in tall dry grass. Once embedded, they can continue migrating and commonly cause painful infections or abscesses.

After outdoor adventures, check common problem areas like:
• Ears
• Eyes
• Paws and between toes
• Armpits and rear fur
• Nose and mouth

Watch for sudden sneezing, head shaking, squinting, limping, excessive licking, swelling, or draining wounds.

Christine recently celebrated one year with Roadrunner and brings 12 years of veterinary experience to the team, including 5 years as a lead technician. She especially enjoys complex internal medicine cases and continues to grow her skills in emergency medicine every day.

Outside of work, Christine enjoys reading, board games, Dungeons & Dragons, and spending time with her family.

Warm weather is here, and so are rising temperatures inside parked vehicles.

Even on mild days, the inside of a car can become dangerously hot within minutes - much faster than many people realize.

Rattlesnake bites don’t always look this dramatic at first.

In New Mexico, even a curious sniff can turn into a medical emergency very quickly. As temperatures rise, rattlesnake encounters become more common on trails, near rocks, and in tall brush.

We are happy to report that Malek is healing well and quickly returning to his normal self after receiving life-saving care at Roadrunner.

If you suspect your pet has been bitten:

• Keep them as calm and quiet as possible
• Do not apply ice or a tourniquet
• Do not attempt to suck out venom
• Seek veterinary care immediately

A pregnant cat in labor…who had just gone through a washing machine.

It’s one of the many unforgettable cases Dr. Kyanna Martinez has treated during her time at Roadrunner. Thanks to quick intervention and dedicated care, both mom and kitten are doing well.

Dr. Martinez is approaching her two-year mark with Roadrunner, bringing more than 15 years of experience in veterinary medicine to our emergency team. Her journey began as a kennel assistant, then a veterinary technician, before ultimately becoming the emergency veterinarian many of our patients rely on today.

Outside the hospital, Dr. Martinez enjoys traveling, photography, board games, watching sports (especially women’s basketball), and spending time with her family and their many dogs.

She also gives back to the community by running a veterinary medicine workshop for kids through the nonprofit STEM Santa Fe, helping inspire the next generation of animal advocates.

We want to thank Dr. Martinez for the care, dedication, and advocacy she brings to our patients and team every day, as well as the inspiration she provides to the next generation of veterinary professionals. Roadrunner is fortunate to have her on our team!

Nanook had some strong opinions about what qualifies as a snack.
His stomach disagreed 👀

Foreign body ingestion is a common emergency we see in puppies- curiosity + sharp teeth + zero judgment = trouble.

What we removed? Not food. Not even close.

🚨 Watch for:
• Vomiting
• Lethargy
• Decreased appetite
• Abdominal pain

These cases can go from mild to life-threatening quickly.

Nanook is on the mend- but this is your reminder: if it fits in their mouth, it’s a risk… and a potential trip to the ER.
