This month we're excited to introduce Zoe, one of our amazing Client Liaisons!

Zoe has worked in veterinary medicine for 7 years, gaining experience in general practice, emergency medicine, oncology, and ultrasound before joining the Roadrunner team. One of her favorite things about veterinary medicine is that there's always something new to learn- and as anyone in emergency medicine knows, there's really no such thing as a "typical" day!

When she's not helping clients and their pets, Zoe enjoys painting, reading, binge-watching horror movies and shows, and spending time outside whenever the weather is nice.

Fun fact: Zoe was born in Germany!

📚 As the kids head back to school, many pets suddenly find themselves home alone after a summer full of activity and companionship. Those changes in their routine can be stressful.

You can help ease the transition- and avoid unwanted behaviors like excessive barking, destructive behavior, chewing on or eating inappropriate items, or accidents in the house- by keeping a consistent routine, providing enrichment toys, and gradually practicing short departures before longer days away.

If your pet is experiencing severe anxiety or their behavior changes, talk with your primary veterinarian. There are many options available to help keep them comfortable and reduce stress.

A little patience and preparation can make the transition back to school easier for everyone - including your four-legged family members- and help reduce the risk of stress-related behaviors that can lead to unexpected trips to the emergency hospital.

Healthy hips start with early information.

PennHIP radiographs can be performed as early as 16 weeks of age, allowing hip laxity to be identified before clinical signs appear. When concerns are recognized early, more treatment options may be available - including interventions that are generally less invasive than those available later in life.

PennHIP radiographs provide an objective measurement of hip joint laxity, helping assess a dog’s risk of developing hip dysplasia and osteoarthritis.

Summer pavement can become dangerously hot, even when the air temperature feels manageable. Before heading out, test the surface with the back of your hand - if the ground is too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for their paws. When temperatures rise, choose cooler times of day for walks.

Watch for limping, paw licking, redness, blistering, or painful paw pads, and come see us if you have any concerns!

More time outdoors means more opportunities for adventure - and injury.

Uneven terrain, sudden jumps, falls, and increased activity can lead to sprains, fractures, paw injuries, and damage to joints or ligaments.

Build activity gradually, know your pet’s limits, and don’t ignore persistent limping after a day on the trail. 🥾🐾

Flat-faced breeds are adorable, but their anatomy can make breathing much more difficult than many owners realize.

Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome (BOAS) is a condition commonly seen in breeds such as Bulldogs, French Bulldogs, Pugs, Boston Terriers, and Shih Tzus. Narrow nostrils, an elongated soft palate, and other airway abnormalities can make it difficult for these pets to move air effectively. These difficulties can become even more pronounced with heat, stress, or exercise.

The good news is that surgical correction can significantly improve airflow, comfort, exercise tolerance, and overall quality of life in many patients. The images below show corrective airway surgery being performed to help improve breathing in a patient affected by BOAS.

If your pet struggles to breathe, snores excessively, or has difficulty tolerating activity or warm weather, talk with your veterinarian about whether an airway evaluation may be appropriate.

Breathing shouldn't be hard work.
