This is a really good reminder about how hot it can be outside for pets. To check if it’s safe for your pet to walk on surfaces outdoors, place your hand or bare foot on the surface for 10 seconds. If it’s too hot for you, it’s too hot for their paws. Go for walks early in the morning or consider skipping the walk altogether until later in the week when temperatures are at least out of the 90’s. A special warning for brachycephalic dogs – our cute smoosh-faced friends like Pugs, Cavaliers, and Frenchies – because of their shortened airways, they cannot pant efficiently and they can overheat even when the ambient temperature is as low as 70°F. Enjoy the summer, but stay safe out there! ☀️🐾🐾☀️

This is a very special day for our profession in Minnesota. We now have three Licensed Veterinary Technicians in our practice – Maria, Rose, and Kallie. Between them they have over 40 years of experience! By fully utilizing veterinary technicians’ training and skills, we free up the veterinarians to spend more time using their advanced veterinary medical education to treat patients. With the additional support of our veterinary assistants – Abbey, Becca, and Emily – we are able to provide the highest level of patient care and the whole practice thrives as a result of this team effort.

Today marks a historic milestone for the veterinary profession in Minnesota: as of July 1, 2026, veterinary technician licensure is officially in effect across our state!

This achievement represents years of dedication, advocacy, collaboration, and persistence by countless individuals who believed that veterinary technicians deserve professional recognition through licensure. What was once a vision has now become reality.

The Minnesota Association of Veterinary Technicians extends our sincere gratitude to everyone who helped make this possible. To the volunteers, advocates, legislators, veterinary professionals, and supporters who dedicated their time and energy to this effort- thank you!

We are especially grateful for our partnership with the MVMA Minnesota Veterinary Medical Association. Working together toward a shared goal strengthened our profession and demonstrated what can be accomplished through collaboration.

Today is more than the implementation of a law, it is the beginning of a new chapter for veterinary technicians in Minnesota. Licensure helps elevate our profession, strengthens public trust, and recognizes the education, knowledge, and skills that licensed veterinary technicians bring to patient care every day.

To every veterinary technician in Minnesota: congratulations on this historic day! Thank you for the care, compassion, and expertise you provide to animals, clients, and veterinary teams every day.

Here's to the future of the LVT profession in Minnesota!

Please contact the clinic if you think your pup needs medication to help cope with fireworks, we'd love to help them be able to enjoy the weekend too.

We are seeking your assistance in locating a missing cat. The cat is orange and white in color and was last seen after escaping from his owners carrier in our parking lot at our clinic near Labeaux and 57th. It may be hiding in nearby bushes, trees, or under vehicles. If you have any information regarding the cat's whereabouts, please contact us at 763-515-6446. Have you seen this cat?

Did you know?? Your puppy doesn't need to have gone to puppy kindergarten to be a part of the Basic Manners class. Basic Manners is a great way to have fun with your teenage (16 weeks or older) dog while they interact with other people and dogs and continue to work on their skills of sit, down, come, leave it, and wait, AND that all-important walking on leash. 🐾🐾

This week's spring weather has been beautiful and that means THE GNATS ARE OUT! We usually see gnat bites on the undersides of dogs - bellies and private areas - the parts that are closest to the grass. Gnat (black fly) bites appear as bright red lesions and although the bullseye-appearing bites look dramatic, most dogs are not bothered by them and they resolve on their own in a few days without treatment.

This is a very hard subject for anyone in veterinary medicine, and for any pet owner. In our mission to help pets and pet owners we often find ourselves providing the advice that a pet doesn't have to get to their worst day before it is the right day to help them go. It is part of our obligation to protect them from suffering. 🐾❤️🐾
