SARCOIDS. These non metastatic skin tumors are unique to the equine species. They are the most common type of skin tumor in horses, thought to be associated with bovine papillomavirus. They are serious because they are locally and aggressively invasive. Please be doing skin checks on your horses. Face/ears, ventral abdomen, groin, sheath are common sites. Best treatment is early intervention (small tumors) with surgical excision or laser followed up with chemotherapy and strict long term monitoring, because recurrence is the most common complication. Sarcoids are not be be taken lightly. Call us. We are here to help.

TMJ DISEASE IN HORSES. This is a very painful orthopedic condition. Etiologies range from blunt force trauma, dental abnormalities/malocclusion, to a poor fitting bridle/bit or the typical wear and tear of osteoarthritis. Most common clinical signs are quidding, tilting head while eating, eating slowly/refusing to eat, difficult prehension and mastication and not fully opening the mouth, tossing head during training. Treatment addresses the primary source to relieve pain and inflammation and increase range of motion. Dentistry, anti inflammatory medications, cold laser therapy. Acupuncture, providing soft food are the first lines of defense. Since the TMJ is a synovial structure, hydrogel is an effective IA treatment in advanced cases. Give us a call. We are here to help relieve your horses pain.

THE WORKING RANCH HORSE. They are tough and never complain to a fault. They are stoic and just keep working.
We are here to help. Ask us how can treat synovitis and osteoarthritis ((OA). OA is common in the radiocarpal joint spaces, especially on the medial side. These can be difficult cases because the carpus is high motion in contrast to the distal tarsus which is low motion, high load. Early signs may be as subtle as tripping occasionally to obvious effusion, positive flexion, and lameness. The equine team manages OA with early and aggressive joint therapy combined with nutritional support and alternative medicine for the best long term prognosis.

IN MEMORIAM. This message is to honor a father/son duo affected by ge***al squamous cell carcinoma. This is the most common neoplasm in this area. However it is rather unusual for a father and son to be affected. The most common cause is EcPV2, papillomavirus. These boys were laid to rest yesterday morning and their family has graciously and honorably allowed us to submit whole blood, hair, and tissue to the genetics lab at UC Davis, to further gain knowledge, insight, and hopefully more effective treatment modalities in the future. Thank you all for your part in this long journey, and thank you especially to the boys' family. Equine cancer research greatly appreciates you. Sincerely. The equine team.

Dont forget about incisor care during equine dentistry. The incisors do play an important role in "nipping" the forage behind the prehensile lips.
