EPM. It can come in all shapes and sizes. Yes even EPM can present with masseter atrophy. One of the hallmark clinical signs of EPM is muscular atrophy. Obviously rule out other mundane causes of dysphagia such as TMJ pain and dental abnormalities. Nutritional myopathies such as vitamin E and selenium deficiency must also be considered. Adding high doses of vitamin E can markedly improve nerve and muscle function, thus treatment success rates. Call the equine team. We are here to help.

THE NOT SO SEASONAL ALLERGIES. It seems that every season of the year brings with it different allergens that set up an environment for lower airway disease that can last a majority of the year. The allergens produce that classic grey/mucoid nasal discharge with usually no fever. Summer.....DUST and WILDFIRE SMOKE. Fall...weed pollen and continuation of smoke. Winter....heavy rains that bring mold spores. Spring...tree and grass seed pollen. Let us help you and your horse manage airway hypersensitivity and prevent full blown asthma. EQUINE DEVELOPMENT. It takes years. Give your young horse time to develop. The physes of the cervical vertebrae can take 4 to 6 years to fully mature. Let your young horse have free natural motion. Let's prevent early onset synovitis and physitis/epiphysitis. Let's slow the progression of OA and your young horse/lifelong companion may give you monumentally more years of health and soundness.

EQUINE PHOTOSENSITIVE VASCULITIS. It is sometimes called pastern dermatitis but it is much more than that. The definitive diagnosis is made on histopathology of a skin biopsy. Nonpigmented, white areas of the body are the most common, thus the distal extremities. The muzzle is also another common anatomic location. These horses are quite painful because of the vasculitis syndrome. There can be edema present and secondary bacterial infection present, with necrotic crusts. If you suspect this condition, call right away and remove your horse from direct UV light and provide turnout during the nighttime hours. call the equine team. We are here to help.
