My mom is in town and got some great pictures! 😃 I wonder if I should start taking pics and posting a few dogs here each week. Maybe if it doesn't slow things down. Holler if you want your dogs featured!

If you've ever watched your dog do something ridiculous and thought they knew exactly what they were doing, you might be right.

Researchers at Eötvös Loránd University in Budapest studied how dogs process human emotions using fMRI brain scans. They found that a specific area of dogs' brains shows significantly more activity in response to positive human sounds like laughter than to negative sounds like crying.

That means dogs don't just hear the difference between a laugh and a cry. They feel it.

The study found that dogs who got a laugh out of a particular behaviour, like spinning in circles, doing zoomies, or making that face they make, were more likely to repeat it. Not randomly. Deliberately. They learned what worked and they kept doing it.

Behavioural researchers have built on this, noting that dogs have enough social awareness to understand that laughter is a positive response and will actively seek it out. Some dogs develop entire routines of behaviours designed to get a reaction from their owners.

Whether it qualifies as a "sense of humour" is still debated. What isn't debated is that your dog notices when you laugh, remembers what caused it, and tries to make it happen again.

So the next time your dog does something absurd and looks at you to check if you saw it, yes, they meant to do that 💛

You may have noticed my approach with the dogs. I don't usually take any time to introduce myself, I avoid the head on purpose, and I definitely don't do kissy faces. I like to start with the back feet with a calm energy, see how they do, and let dogs realize they are safe, instead of trying to convince them. I'll do a chest rub without eye contact on the bigger dogs if they are positioned for it. Basically I let time and my energy persuade them to relax. I like to "send them love" like in The Secret Life of Bees. A lot of dogs shake out the stress afterward, and some want to be friends. Many don't, and that's okay. 😄
