🗣️“I don’t know why my dog’s hair keeps falling out every spring and summer…”☀️
We’ve heard this several times recently, and while there can be many causes of skin problems, one of the most common is surprisingly simple:
🪳Fleas.
Many dogs with flea allergies don’t have to be covered in fleas to have a reaction. In fact, a single flea bite can cause intense itching, hair loss, red skin, scabs, and hot spots in sensitive dogs.
Common signs include:�✔ Excessive scratching, chewing, or licking�✔ Hair loss, especially around the tail, back, and belly�✔ Red, irritated skin�✔ Scabs or sores from scratching�✔ “Flea dirt” (small black specks) in the coat
And fleas don’t just cause itchy skin.
🦟 Fleas can also transmit tapeworms and contribute to other intestinal parasite problems. Dogs often swallow fleas while grooming, which is one of the most common ways they become infected with tapeworms.
Many owners notice their dog’s skin improves during the winter months, only to worsen again in the spring and summer when flea populations explode.
The good news? Flea allergies and flea infestations are often very manageable with proper prevention and treatment.
If your dog is losing hair or constantly scratching, don’t assume it’s just “the season.” Talk with your veterinarian and make sure your pet is on an effective flea prevention program.
